FIFA suspends Russian clubs and national teams from all competitions

FIFA/UEFA suspend Russian clubs and national teams from all competitions

So this applies all the way down. World Cup Qualifiers, Europa League (there are no Russian teams in Champions League I think), etc.

Hopefully the International Chess Federation (FIDE), International Olympic Committee, International Physics Olympiad, International Federation of Tiddlywinks Associations, and so on, will climb aboard.

As to FIDE:

taken a number of measures against Russia and Belarus, including a ban on hosting official events and displaying their flags in FIDE-rated events.

I did not anticipate such a rapid response.

IOC appears to be doing stuff too, but no confirmation on those details yet.

International Hockey {IIHF} is expected to make an announcement today.

Oh no! Russia will have to compete under the name Trans-ural Olympic Committee in 2024! The horror!
Why, yes, I do think that ROC bullshit was about the most weak-sauce “punishment” possible. Oh, noes! We have to play Tchiakovsky during our medal ceremony instead of our national anthem. That’ll teach us not to dope.

Well the IOC is the most corrupt sports organization in the world. FIFA is only second. The NCAA at third is pretty mild by comparison.

Where does Professional Boxing and UFC rank though?

Boxing is more difficult because there’s multiple bodies but I know the UFC does all sorts of shady shit regarding promotions.

Good question and I’m not sure I even thought of those 2 as sports anymore. I figured they’re closer to Pro-Wrestling.

Russia may have legal standing to sue. I don’t think FIFA have legal standing to punish a team for what their host nation did.

Who cares? Sometimes you have to do the right thing and then let the lawyers straighten it out later.

But should they? Do they want their team being booed and the commentary that would go with that?

Cool. Still won’t host the CL final or qualify for the World Cup if this keeps up.

The legal niceties may not matter much if other European clubs and countries refuse to play them.

Q: Have we seen athletes who happen to be Russian banned yet form any sports, rather then ones who represent a country?

Mazepin has been banned from the British GP, but that’s the only example that comes to mind so far. Frankly, the dude sucks anyway, both on and off the course.

Tennis is letting Russian athletes play so far. They don’t represent their country, of course. The NHL is not doing anything about Russian athletes.

So, I know of no cases of Russian athletes who don’t represent their country being banned from anything, except for asterion’s example.

Mazepin has now been fired by Haas, which just means some other driver is going to keep starting 19th and ending up 20th every race.

Sure, but it looks like it might be Fittipaldi, who will at least get some F1 experience and look to move up, even while finishing in the back of the grid for the time being.

(granted Pietro Fittipaldi isn’t that great of a driver and may just be sitting in for testing while Haas finds some other young driver)

Hilariously, …I just remembered my ‘Internet name’ is…Russian (From Pavel Bure and NHL95)

Wonder if that had any affect on people’s responses…nahhhhhhh.
