Filemaker printing - adapting to diff. length records?

I seem to recall that there is some way to set up a filemaker database to print so that it will automatically adjust to the length/size of a record.

I have a bunch of records, the data in one particular field might be a single word, or as much as two paragraphs. If I set up the format of the form to accomodate the very long records, I have tons of blank space and wasted paper for the very short records.

I am absolutely certain there is a way to set it up to be flexible, I just can’t find it.

help!

Layout->Format->Sliding/Printing (at least in FM 6).

What beowulff said, PLUS take the most variable of your fields and on the PRINTING version of your layout replace the field with a merge code. This is a merge code:

<<YourFieldName>>

As a text object it will have four resize handles. Grab them and yank down until you’ve got a text block maybe twice the height of the longest value you expect to ever encounter. (Obviously all layout elements normally below that need to be moved down below where the text object stops).

NOW click that field AND anything below it on the layout and set it via Sliding/Printing to not only slide up but also to reduce the size of the enclosing part.

Thank you so much! It all comes back to me now…
