Film Genres You Hate And Won't Watch (With Few Or Any Exceptions)

Some people hate horror films. Some hate Westerns, or Romance, or any films with Zombies.

Are there any film genres that you never watch?
And if so, were there any exceptions to your rule?

Westerns are pretty much the only genre I can think of in where I’d reject a movie outright because of its genre. I just find the locations and general plots to be repetitive, boring, and just ‘not my thing.’

Save for Lust in the Dust (comedy) and The Rare Breed (An inside joke with my sister).

Martial arts - I’ve barely tolerated Jackie Chan and Crouching Tiger. No interest at all.
Westerns, without exception, I think.
Most war movies, unless they have a point to them other than watching battles (Stalag 13, MAS*H, The Bridge On the River Kwai are good, The Green Berets are not), unless they they have James Garner. Few recent war movies fall into this category of existing just for the battles, though, except maybe the Michael Bay Pearl Harbor, though I haven’t seen it so I couldn’t really say for sure.
Japanese movies altogether - people always tell me, “this one’s different, it’s not at all like a Japanese movie” - yes, it is. This includes samarai movies, even ones with Toshiro.
Most biographies - unless it’s nearly completely accurate, why should I waste my time? If I want fiction, I’ll watch fiction. I’m still pissed off about The Birdman of Alcatraz. Same thing goes for based-on-a-true-story movies that have nothing to do with the actual event, like Fly Away Home, for example. Now, Gandhi and Monster were both within my acceptable range for accuracy.
Most sports movies - especially baseball and football. Unless the sport is secondary to the theme, like The Longest Yard or Brian’s Song (sniff).
The genre of movie I don’t know what to call wherein John Travolta is cool.
Modern caper movies like Ocean’s xx or The Italian Job. Too smugly self-congratulatory for me.
Nicolas Cage movies.
Most Bruce Willis movies, except for the one-off ones like The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable (okay, two-off).
Tom Cruise movies.
Buddy movies.
LOTR-type saga/quest movies with non-human fantasy creatures - sorry, just not my thing.

I guess I don’t like a lot of guy movies.

Ah, that reminds me: anything containing the name “Danielle Steel”.

Definitely won’t watch Saw/Hostel/Final Destination type films where the “plot” is just a thin veneer so that they can show “imaginative” deaths and mutilations.

Mob/Mafia movies.

Slasher “horror” films.

Bio pics, usually, but that’s because nobody’s made a film about people I care about. If someone made a Jim Henson or George Lucas bio pic, I’d probably give it a look.

Prison movies. I’ve never even watched The Shawshank Redemption.
Slasher movies.
Torture porn.

Horror films - I don’t enjoy being scared or watching other people be hurt/killed.

Westerns - snore.

All of them. I hate movies and actors.

Agree with your list, needscoffee, for the same reasons. I’d add Horror.

I’m unconcerned about inaccurate biography, though, since I saw A Beautiful Mind. I was well warned about how inaccurate it was, so I watched it as a film in its own right, with lots of references to the mathematical things I find so interesting. I wasn’t a Russell Crowe fan at all until then. I loved it.

Any preview with a car chase or the usual violence-and-nothing-but-violence will put me off immediately.

Westerns
older WWII movies
movies based on comic books
action movies from the last 20 years

Well, I will watch in any genre if it sounds like it’s not just the run of the mill, but I tend to avoid horror (being able to scare the audience requires not talent whatsoever and frankly, I don’t find it fun), reference comedies, any nonmusical film whose ads feature the names of those performing on the soundtrack, and dumb slapstick comedy.

One, a movie in which a key point is a man who meets a son or daughter he never knew he had, and

Two, a movie in which two wildly incompatible people who can’t stand each other are thrown together and by the end of the movie are in love with each other. The only exception here is The African Queen.

In order of emphaticness of my refusal: horror films, war films, Westerns.

I’m going with martial arts / kung fu movies. Specifically Segal or the other guy. Or the asian guy. They’re all the same to me. Don’t get me wrong; I can appreciate the Bruce Lee movies for what they mean, but now with all the effects, CGI, staged violence and what not, they’re just not that great for me.

A friend of mine said this about Westerns, and as a Southerner, I almost spit my tabacky on her bustle.

I guess I should add the latest wave (about 10 years or so) of stupid teen movies. We all sat around watching the hockey game the other night and when it was over, some moron put in *Superbad *and insist we all watch it. I lasted about 20 minutes and then went home.

Mafia/gangster movies. They may be really high quality, seminal works, but I have no interest in seeing the Godfather movies, Goodfellas, The Sopranos, etc. The whole world of organized crime, which some people seem to find so fascinating, I just find repellant.

Is “stereotypic chick flick” a recognized genre? If so, put me down for that.

I don’t like horror movies, because I tolerate them poorly and will lose sleep. Terrified sleep. I had nightmares about Jason vs. Freddy. Seriously.

“Japanese” isn’t a genre. I’m not saying you would like any Japanese movie, but presumably you also wouldn’t like American movies in the same genre.

For example, it would be very strange if you hated “Seven Samurai” but liked “The Last Samurai”, or hated “Ringu” but liked “The Ring”.
As for me, slasher films and almost any horror film holds no interest.

I would have said Westerns in the past, but then I saw and enjoyed “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.”

Yeah. Torture porn is just a no-go area for me.

I also have a hard time wanting to watch romance/romantic story films (say, The Horse Whisperer), unless they contain some sort of weird/quirky/supernatural/mysterious/otherworldly elements to keep me interested (so, Amelie was good)
