Movie Genre Hatred

Does anyone have a particular gendre of films that they have contempt for? My own is British gangster films. The grubby mongrel when compared to The Godfather and Goodfellas. Most reference Sixties nonentities the Kray twins, oddly lionized by certain elements of UK society.

The one exception for me is The Long Good Friday, one of my favorite films and sort-of-banned from UK television in the Eighties. Pierce Brosnan stabs that French bloke from Raders of the Lost Ark and Charlie from Casualty gets his throat cut. Good, clean family fun.

“The Mafia? I’ve shit 'em!”. Not literally, obviously. Organised crime does not make good roughage.

Genre. No “d.”

[Pssst…it’s ‘genre’]

Mine is horror, of the slasher variety. Two hours of jump scares + gore is just not entertaining to me.

Just a historical note: Hollywood had heavily invested in British filmmaking all through the swinging 60’s. Eventually a few productions got notoriously out of hand, and then the Arab Oil Embargo killed it off. Bob Hoskins telling the Americans to fuck off in 1980 was the announcement that British cinema would now return, and on its own.

Super Heroes. Oddly enough I do enjoy the tv show Gotham.

Zombie movies, Vampire movies, remakes (Yes, that’s a genre all of its own now)

I really wish I could find an edit feature and spell, ‘genre’ correctly.

Martial Arts films.

Luckily a lot of them are easily recognizable since they usually have the word “Dragon” in them.

Horror, especially slasher horror. It’s tedious and annoying and it’s ridiculously easy to make audiences jump (one reason why people starting in independent small films make horror films – it’s simple to do). My general feeling is that someone who startles you is a jerk and horror all too often is just trying to startle you (not scare you).

I’m not a big fan of superhero films. They’re tiresome and predictable and since I find fight scenes boring, I have little reason to want to see them.

I realize that I rarely watch war films. There are some exceptions (Inglorious Basterds), but I don’t like people shooting at each other.

It’s too late for that. only lies can save my dignity.

The English often insert an extra ‘d’ into French words as our privilege after Agencourt. It is our right, sorely won by God and king Henry.

Not hatred, but I do rather dislike:

  1. Horror - I even tried the well received Babadook and didn’t like it. I did like The Shining and Halloween(the original). Psycho is great if you count it.

  2. Romantic Comedies - Way too cheesy and formulaic. I thought Notting Hill was funny when it was new, but it was painfully bad when I re-watched it recently. And I like Blackadder!

Somebody else do it. I don’t have the heart.

Getting back on topic, I dislike the current genre of torture porn: Saw, Hostel, Human Centipede, etc.

AS in “garadge” or “refridgerator”?

^ I have no heart. It’s Agincourt!

Don’t you mean “Hendry”?

For me, it’s the ‘torture porn’ sun-genre. Movie’s like Hostel and SAW.

I can’t watch rom-com movies.

I don’t like the slasher genre of horror, but i love a good mental horror film.

I don’t like most erotic movies. They are terrible! The sex is less important than the drama. I am here to watch, essentially, softcore porn. STFU with the stupid drama and make with the hotness.

I’ve fixed the thread title, as it was causing me physical pain every time I browsed the forum. However, I’ve left the one in the OP as a mark of personal shame.

I’m not willing to write off any genre in entirety; a good movie is a good movie.

That said, I will not go out of my way to see a movie of the fantasy/teen variety e.g. Twilight, Percy Jackson, etc. And “dance” movies are almost universally dollar-theater garbage.
