Final Fantasy Tactics: Mindflare attack/status

So, I’ve dusted off the old FFT game and resolved to try to finish it this time. I’m actually doing all right except…

I can’t remember whether the Mindflare status attack is permanent, and if so, what it affects. The Mind Blast will inflict Berserk/Confused status on the target(s), and the game says “Brain has been discolored” or something like that. Has Ramza’s mind been weakened (further)? Should I reset the game if an essential character gets a discolored brain?

Right now I’m trying to level up Agrias (Holy Knight) and Mustadio (Engineer) before the big Golgorand execution site battle. There’s only one random battleground available to me now, and it seems that if I have Ramza in the party I will always have mindflares in the opposing party.

I’m 90% certain that its temporary and “Brain has been discolored.” is just an weird sounding translation.

This link seems to support that; for attacks that have a permanent effect, they mention it (ie Level Blast). I’ll double check on my game in a little bit, but I think you’re safe.

I brought a level 50 squire with 12MA into battle, bravery at 65 and faith at 70. The rest of the party was high enough and equipped so that they weren’t a factor. The mind flayer I kept alive was level 71 with MA of 20.

Mind Blast hit 5 times out of 9, once landing both confuse and berserk, twice landing confuse only, and twice landing berserk only.

After the battle, the character was unchanged, still with 65 bravery and 70 faith, 12MA.

Scientific it ain’t, but hopefully there’s your answer.

It’s scientific enough for me. Thank you.

Got any other tips or tricks for me? Right now my main goal is to get Agrias Equip Sword and Mustadio Equip Gun, since they are really specialized characters that don’t do well unless they can use their preferred weapon.

My first move was to get everyone Gained JP Up from Squire/Whatever. After that, I brought someone with the Knight’s skills to cut the enemy’s PA, MA, and speed, then just have the party pummel each other until I got tired of it. The Monk skill Chakra was really useful for restoring HP and MP, so you can keep it up for as long as you like.

Also, I don’t remember what chapter its unlocked, but Ramza’s Yell skill was pretty useful too, speed +1 for the rest of battle and it stacks.

The only thing to watch out for is gaining too much XP, since some of the random battles can get pretty hard without good equipment. If you’re careful, though, and enjoy a challenge, this isn’t much of a problem.

Ramza’s yell skill is awesome, and the “beating on each other” tactic is great but kinda breaks the game if you get too high as all the story battles thereafter are pretty easy.

My recommendations would be to not bother with the generic characters as there are story characters who will always be far better, your Agrias, Mustadio, etc, and of course TG Cid who is by far the best character in the game. I’d concentrate on getting everyone mastered on the job classes that they specialize in (and yes get Gained JP up as soon as possible) then get them good secondary skills, and have everyone master their squire class. Squires have the most health and is often a good class to revert back to when you’re in a story battle, especially for Ramza.

Lastly, CALCULATORS. If you’re willing to put the time into a calc, they’re easily the best of the generic classes in the game. Get a character to master at least one or two magic classes, then switch them to the Calculator class to learn a few of the skills, then slowly get them to master all the magic classes and the calculator class and you will have a VERY powerful character who can target anyone, everyone, or just certain people. They take awhile before they’re useful, and they take awhile each turn to figure out what variables to use to target the right group of people, but they’re amazingly powerful

Right now everyone knows Gained JP Up and Autopotion, and it’s equipped on everyone. All the generics know Accumulate, which is useful when they have Basic as a command. Yell appears in Chapter 2: The Manipulator and the Subservient (or whatever it is) and when Ramza’s in the battle, he’s usually Yelling or Cheering Up. I guess I need to do some more magic using levelling up, right now I’m trying to get some Monk skills learned. Wave Fist is awesome. I love being able to hit something without a counter attack.

Everyone survived the execution site last night, AND I managed a successful steal on Gafgarion’s bloodsword. I made two separate saves, as I don’t want to go through all that dialogue yet again.

I like to surround a yellow chocobo, who will heal my party when he cures himself. I guess I’ll use this while mastering some mages, mages generally don’t do much physical damage.

Thanks, you two.
