I’ve been waiting a long time for the next FF game to be out for the PS2. I thought it would be an online FFXI, which I preordered the first day the PS2 came out.
It doesn’t look as if X-2 is an online game.
"Taking place two years after Yuna’s fateful journey to defeat Sin, the once chaotic world of Spira has gone through a massive transformation, entering a period of “Eternal Calm”. The people of Spira now shun the teachings of Yevon and have opened their arms to former foes, the Al Bhed and the use of machina. " http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=280688
However, there’s one thing that’s been driving me nuts…
People keep referring to this as “the first Final Fantasy with a female lead!”. It’s not. Final Fantasy 6 was the first game in the series with a female lead, and that was 10 years ago.
Ultrafilter: others say Locke was the lead character… or both. So it’s not really a stretch to say that FF X-2 will be the first with only a female lead.
Secondly, FF 6 would not have made a great sequal (financially anyway) because only us old farts or hardcore fans have played 1 through 6. Most people have played 7 to 10.
I should mention 11-18 is the ship date. Should be instore on the 19th according to the guy at electronics boutique who wants a $5 deposit to reserve it. BBV said they won’t have it until the street date, 12/12
There’s a demo in this month’s Playstation magazine, as well as the “Eternal Calm” short story video that was tacked on to the international version of FFX.
The demo is awesome - I love the new battle and job systems. I’ll be first in line when this comes out.
I picked it up on the way home from the slave-labor camp on Tuesday. I was off yesterday, so I’ve been playing since Tuesday evening with limited interruptions for eating, sleeping, and “24”. I’m about 16 hours through the game, which took about 20 or 22 real hours (got GG’d a few times). So you could say that I’m enjoying it.
Like I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, I loved FFX, so just the fact that I get to wander around Spira some more is reason enough for me to enjoy this one. It’s cool recognizing different places as you visit them again. I’m also digging the story. So far it’s been pretty simple, with some interesting stuff lurking underneath.
And I really love the job system. I’ve been dual-developing the characters so far, and I think I’ve worked out a system where they can make it through most battles pretty well, although an OMG UBAR FIEND comes along once in a while and knocks me back a ways.
Let’s see… what else was there - ah yes, the battle system. I really like the active time (ATB) thang. It makes X-2 feel much more action-oriented than its predecessor. It also makes me use obscenities more than I did with FFX when a beast is wailing on me and I realize I forgot to arrange my items so anything useful isn’t 30 clicks down the list. It definitely keeps it interesting though.
Anyhoo - if you liked FFX I would assume this would be a no-brainer. Even if you didn’t, if you enjoy RPGs you may want to give X-2 a rent anyway. The job system and the ATB system set it apart pretty well. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to pretend to work for eight hours or so.
EB tried to give us the same line, but Gamestop had it at 8pm on the 18th. And we didn’t have to reserve it or anything. And we got to play the new Mario Cart and hang out while we waited.
I didn’t even realize it was available in stores now… Man, this last semester of college sure is distracting me from important world events.
I am excited to hear so many good things about it so far. The screenshots I have seen so far have been beautiful, and the reviews grand. I was hoping that it wouldn’t turn out to be sub-par.
I got my wife hooked on FF with FFX, so she is about as eager as I am to own this game.
Playing the game makes me feel really, really old. There’s all the flashing and explosions and running around and jumping and all the buttons and I can’t keep up. I don’t understand a bit of what’s going on, but I like it.
It seems as if the Final Fantasy Tactics team went to see the new Charlie’s Angels movie and said, “Let’s make that.”
I think it’s very bizarre, kind of a Japanese 70s Chick Team movie. Charlie’s Angels, Fox Force 5, whatever. It’s weird, but if you can buy the weirdness, it’s a solid game.
I’m simply in love with this game insofar as I’ve played. It seems like everything that characterized FFX that they removed for its sequel was replaced by something new and, in most cases, superior. The game seems a lot less somber than the angsty Final Fantasies that have come out since 6 (inclusive). The optional sidequests are plentiful, rewarding, and enjoyable. I’m barely even actually doing anything storyline related.
I would hope so… I wish there were an option to listen to the Japanese voices instead, Xenosaga was a game that was nearly ruined by the poor voice acting.
