Final Fantasy XII: initial reactions

I’ve played it for about an hour…here are a few observations.

The graphics in the game engine (i.e. non-pre-rendered) are noticeably better than they were in FFX. (I have never played XI.) The completely user-controllable camera angles will take some practice for me to use effectively, I think.

The story, about an embattled nation beset on all sides by hostile forces, is interesting so far. The sudden change of POV after half an hour was jarring.

The combat system will also need some practice. Swing, run away while the ATB meter fills, run back, swing, repeat… (I need to find some better armor.)

This game takes some of its races from FF Tactics Advance, along with the name of the world (“Ivalice”). Hmm.

Leveling up is much like the Sphere Grid from FFX, but less linear. The “License Board” looks like a malformed chess board. Activating one square opens up all adjacent squares.

Oh, and the real-life “Potion” energy drink from Suntory was an interesting promo item. Sold out in my area in less than a week. (Pictures on my blog.) Tastes kind of like Dimetapp – albeit an herbal, caffeinated Dimetapp.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the new “freezable” wait mode battle system, but the new ATB just feels like a bad MMORP.

I love the two levels/scenarios that they give you on the disc that comes with “Dragon Quest VIII,” so I’m hungrily awaiting an american release…

The design team on this game came in large part from the Tactics Advance team.
