I just started playing FFX today, and I don’t see what all the hype is about. Sure, the graphics are nice, and the voice acting isn’t bad, but the plot just didn’t seem to stick well with me so far (after about an hour and a half). Doesn’t seem very engaging. Maybe this is due to the fact that I don’t have a manual? What do you guys think of this game? Good? Bad? Mediocre?
Sorry to hear that you aren’t too pleased so far, Chekmate. I absolutely loved the game. The voices took a little while for me to get used to, but that was probably the only thing that was kind of iffy.
Of course, the new Sphere Grid system for abilities took me a WHILE to get used to… and now that I have gotten used to it, it just seems too kewl. Square has done this sort of thing in all the FFs though… we get used to having Designated White and Black Mages in FF1 and FF2 (or FF4 in Japan) and then we get this new system of spells in FF3 (FF6 in Japan) with the Espers. Then with FF7, its the Materia thing… etc etc. It’s always taken me a while to get used to the new system(s), but in the end, I love their creativity.
Anywho… only an hour into the game… you still have plenty of time to get into it. It gets a lot better, and the plot gets a lot thicker (as to be expected from FF).

The plot, sadly, is probably best in the first hour or so. Trust me, if you’ve played the previous Playstation editions of Final Fantasy they’ve really introduced nothing new (aside from a potential “screw you” to the player at the end, which didn’t bother me because by that time I’d grown sick of the plot element that gets dispatched.)
Don’t worry, they’re making two sequels to the damn thing which will no doubt sell fiften bajillion copies to all the Square zombies.
The Sphere grid was pretty cool, too be fair.
Except for the ability to swap characters mid-battle, and to swap weapons and armor. This really does make a huge difference, if you use it well.
The plot gets a lot better after a while; if you’ve only played for an hour, you haven’t seen anything good yet (except for Sin attakcing Zanarkand–that was cool). But if you really don’t like the game, then there’s no point in playing it, right?
Oh, and LilShieste, if you’re interested in strange character development systems, you should definitely check out FF2 (the Japanese–I always use that numbering system). In there, there’s no such thing as a “level”; rather, your characters gain (and lose!) attribute points based on what they do in battle. It makes for a bit of strategy.
Yup. Talking about the plot, though.
Well, you didn’t mention that in your post–or if you thought you did, it wasn’t as clear as you thought. Save your rolleyes for someone who deserves it.
It’s kinda hard to come up with a completely new plot for the Final Fantasy series, just because of the way gameplay works. If you don’t like the sorts of plots that Square has done, then you’d do well to avoid the franchise in the future.
Although, I can empathize a little bit. Just once I’d like to see a Final Fantasy game with no love story in it.
Wow, I think the plot is rather engaging. I really got into it around hour… ten or so? I can’t recall. Where I am at right now… Is just after Tidus discovers the death-mission that Yuna is on. I like Yuna!!!
