3-3 in the top of the 9th. Pettitte gave 7 1/3rd & Bruney struck out 2 of 2 in relief.
Yankees win, 4-3.
The one big, glaring hole the Rays still have is Troy Percival as the closer. The guy is 39 and just doesn’t seem to have “it” anymore. Do wish that Longoria had been available as well.
Jeter and Mo! Just like the old days. Yanks take it 4-3, with Jeter getting the go ahead hit in the 9th and Rivera closing the Rays out 1-2-3. I’ll be happy with 2 of 3 from Tampa every time.
Looks like Nady is going on the DL with an elbow. That gives the Yankees a lot less flexibility, but it will let Swisher stay in there every day.
La Russa is saying the Cards will be without Chris Carpenter for 4-8 weeks. I’m not sure where he’s getting that since Carp hasn’t met with the doctors yet, but it’s an unsually pessimistic prediction. Two freakin’ months.
And the Cubs are coming up. Four games at Wrigley. If you’re a Cards fan, is there anything better than a pitched battle against Chicago? If the Cards can come away with a split, I’ll be just tickled.
On the other side of the coin, the Yanks will bring up either an extra 1B or RP or maybe even a third catcher. Swisher’s outfield defense is weak but if he can return to what he was just two years ago he will be a valuable bat. He is off to an incredible start and if he falters, Melky is ready to step up and actually plays the best RF defense of all of the Yanks OFs.
Then if Austin Jackson progresses the way some think he might, he could be a June call up to take over Right Field.
That was a damn good win today. Jeter scores the tying run and knocks in the go ahead and Mo gets the save.
Over the last few years the Cards are NEVER forthcoming on injuries (see Rolen, Edmonds, Glaus, et al). So Tony might be trying to lower expectations for a change. Let’s hope so.
A split with baby bears would be great.
Closers are a big problem. The most respected ones are getting old. Most teams are trying to bring a young one up and hope they catch the next hot thing.
The most respected ones right now are Rivera (old), Papelbon (young), Soria (young), Lidge (32), K-Rod (young) and Nathan (34).
AND CLEVELAND HAS A NINE-RUN SEVENTH INNING! Kiss me baby I love it.
waves at WhatExit?
Sorry I am over here whimpering. This is no way to open a new stadium. At least Jorge got the first Homer.
Are Texans pleased they stuck the Tigers with Galarraga?
We shall see as the season goes on. They get old like someone flipped a light switch turning off their youth.
No matter how much we fucking suck right now, I feel like we’re the best damn team in baseball. Clobbering the Stankees on the opening day of their new big-fucking-deal stadium? ZOMG!
I gotta say, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the Mariners so far. I’m cautiously optimistic, though, since we here in the Northwest are pretty well accustomed to mid-season letdowns in recent years. Still, it feels great to have Griffey back. Maybe there’s hope this year after all!
Also, anybody catch Ichiro’s grand slam last night? That was a beauty, that was. And on his season debut game!
Yup, I’ll say it again: How 'bout them Mariners?
Cool: Endy Chavez opening the season with a 9-game hitting streak.
Tigers are going to start a series there tomorrow. It could get interesting.
Toronto’s back in first place!
I know it’s pointless 10 games in, but I’m not going to get very many chances to say it, so I’m taking the opportunity now.
The Jays aren’t really this good - they just can’t really hit this well. The pitching will be fine, but the offense cannot possibly be good. They just don’t have the personnel to continue scoring a lot of runs. They’ve just all gotten hot at the same time.
Nats win!! Nats win!!
Yeah, you go 0-7, the first win feels worth shouting about.
