Finally gotta physical...

Been putting it off for…forever, really. Never had blood sugar checked, cholesterol checked, blah, blah, blah. I’m 44 and not looking forward to my first heart attack. :frowning:

Knew I hadda lose weight, so I did, maybe 45-50 pounds. Got in shape, too.

Have to say, I was sweating bullets until the magic numbers came in:

Weight: 199 pounds (Yay! under 200!)
Height: 5’ 10 3/4" (WTF? I got 3/4" taller? When the hell did that happen?)
BP: 119/72 (Down from 130/80 from the last time I got sick, which is pre-hypertensive, apparently. Dodged one genetic bullet, since dad’s got high BP)
Blood sugar: 93 (Dodged genetic bullet number two. Dad’s got diabetes, too)
Cholesterol: 188 (Okay, but I shudder to think about what it came down from)

The total cholesterol number is really sort of an outmoded concept. What you really want is a Total cholesterol/HDL ratio of much less than 5:1. To that end:

Triglycerides: 80 (good, should be under 150)
LDL: 135 (a little high, gotta work on that) :frowning:
HDL: 37 (a little low, gotta work on that, too) :frowning:

Looks like I’m right on the 5:1 border. Sigh. What to do, what to do…

Still waiting for the PSA results. Dr. Hugefinger says nothing feels enlarged down there  . I dunno, sometimes my urine stream seems a little slow…

I’m sorta relieved, I guess. I wish I could afford to work out for purely vanity reasons instead of health reasons…it would make it a little less obligatory and a little more fun. Sigh…

Good job getting healthier.
What does it matter what reason you’re working out for? Think of it as for vanity and it will be! The reasons don’t really matter…the results do. How being healthy makes you feel…

Here’s the thing: if it were just a vanity issue, I could afford to get a little lazy once in a while if I didn’t mind looking worse for a bit; then, I could just re-lose the weight. Since it’s largely a health issue (at least these days), I don’t feel as free. Don’t get me wrong, in addition to the nice numbers, I actually feel better. After I workout, I like the feeling of relaxation and accomplishment. But I do feel tethered to my routine sometimes, and the importance of keeping it up will only increase as I age. :frowning:

I just had a physical for first time in too long. I’m lazy. Not good at my age.

I’m going back Friday for the numbers. We’ll see. At least I don’t have any really active complaints.
