Last night, Only Mostly Missus had an epiphany on the wedding bands we’ve yet to buy for our upcoming ceremony: Mobius Band Wedding Rings! Sadly, these are platinum and for some inexplicable reason, are $2600 for the mens and $2100 for the womens.
So anybody with a lead on a cheaper wedding band with a twist (I know, groan), white gold perfectly acceptable, let me know! I leave it to the awesome googling powers of my fellow dopers.
(Note to mods: I couldn’t figure out what forum this should be in. I’m looking for factual results, but it’s sort of a poll. And it’s pretty mundane, too. Move as you see fit.)
Searching a bit myself, I see that there are some “mobius pattern” rings that are really just a twist (another and another), and not a true non-orientable surface. As self-respecting geeks, we just can’t settle for that.
Seems to me that if you don’t want to order one via mail, you should be able to find a competent jeweler local to you that can make one up.
When I got married, I had a specific band design that I wanted, and couldn’t find anywhere with the specifications that I needed. (Cigar band style, with inset claddah design) I went to Victorian Jewelers in Manchester NH, and they custom crafted the design. When I had it resized last summer, we saw that they are still selling them, and have added a very nice celtic design on the outside of the band.
While mine is special to me, and the “original design”, I have to admit that I like the one with the celtic design on the band surface a little better, but would NEVER upgrade the one I have on my hand now!
That’s cool. Now I want one. When I told the future Mrs. 'House about it, she initially had doubts. So I told her that it’s an infinite plane, which represents my infinite love for her. She responded by pointing out that it’s also twisted, unusual, and possibly uncomfortable to wear. So it might not be as similar to my love for her as originally thought. But then again it just might.
When I first read this thread a month or so ago, I thought it was a great idea, but as I pointed out I was concerned about how it would feel. So I ordered the silver mobius ring from Ka Jewelry (one of the links Gaudere posted). It’s only $33, so if I don’t like it I’ll know not to spend a ton of money on a white gold one for the actual wedding ring.
I got the ring in the mail today (what I’m calling my practice wedding band). It’s not so bad. It sticks up a little, but not nearly as bad as I thought. And because of the shape, it’s a lot easier to take off (just turn it sideways so the twist is between two of your fingers). I’m going to wear it for a few weeks and make sure, but my first try makes me think a mobius ring would be pretty sweet.
Also, it only took 8 days from the time I ordered the ring for it to get made and sent to me in Arizona from Israel. That’s fast!
Definitely let me know how it is after a few weeks. I’ll be married for at least that long
The only thing I fear from that site is that the ring looks, well, lopsided. like they really just twisted a ring and it ended up a little warped as a result. Is that just an illusion in the pictures, or does your ring really look like that (and if it does look lopsided like the pictures, does it look strange in that same way when it’s actually on the finger?)?
