Finding glass/screens for a storm door

We just moved into a new rental house. It has been badly handled. For the most part I have been able to do the repairs and fix ups, but our screen/storm door (which I found in a pile behind the house) has a missing pane (or screen) and no one in town (very small town) carries replacement panes/screens. We went to a Wal-Mart Super Store about 30 miles away, but no luck there either. One local firm offered to build one for us if we give them the dimensions. A lumber yard offered to special order the glass from the east coast.

This is just a standard screen door, nothing fancy. Isn’t there a place where old screen doors go to die that we can pick up a pane of glass, plexiglass or a screen in a frame to hold out the bugs on summer evenings?

Given the rise in price paid for scrap aluminum, you’re not likely to find old doors or screen/storm panels laying about.
Glass shops buy the aluminum extrusion in bulk, and can fabricate a nice replacement storm or screen panel for you.

Not what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the information.

craigslist? Free section in the newspaper? Dump? Recycle place? Freecycle?

You could make a screen easy enough, although it’d be somewhat cobbled. Screen material you can find at a lumber yard or hardware store.

Possibly before your time, there used to be places called “hardware stores,” where you could get all sorts of things, like replacement windows and screens for your door. Then the Big Box Stores put most of them out of business, and they can’t be bothered providing you with all the things you need.

Try to find a hardware store. But you might have a long drive getting there.
