Finding unreleased music

I don’t think this question got posted last time I tried, so here goes again: how do I go about obtaining music that I heard in the soundtrack of a movie, but was not included on the official soundtrack disc? The particular piece in question is from the movie “Before Night Falls” and may or may not be by the score’s composer, Carter Burwell. It’s a cello duet, title unknown.

Damn. I was hoping you were gonna ask about rare punk rock, and the unreleased Snare and the Idiots album circa 1986, which I will soon own a copy of… drool…

Anyway, try renting a copy of the film, and fast forward to the credits. There should be copyright info for each song used in the film towards the end of them. That should at least give you a place to start.

Once you get the actual name of the composer and the title of the piece, you can start searching to see if its been released on another album, or hit the relevant newsgroups to see if someone would be willing to make a trade or mail you an MP3. It’l be a pain in the rear, but we collector scum are used to the price we pay for our obsession. I know I guy who humps 60 hours a week a really crappy factory job just so he can afford, every couple to years, to go to Australia or Sweden or wherever to look for new gems in the local record joints.
