Fire Island

yeah, I understand completely, Scylla.

Anyway, my friend is always talking about seeing previews for Fire Island on Bravo, and said that they make it out to be some big orgy. haven’t seen any previews myself, only heard about it just recently. I think it would be vaguely amusing.

Moderator’s Notes:

Neither now. The posters concerned with the flaming (sorry 'bout that) aspects have already done the correct thing and gone to the Pit. And I don’t see anything to debate either. So let’s all just keep it cool. M’kay? Thanks.

By the way, Scylla, you mentioned in another thread that it seemed ok to use the phrase “the gay lifestyle” because they used it on television.

Ted Koppel this ain’t.

As ChiefScott pointed out, if they’re going to further say, “See how the other side lives,” they’re using the term “lifestyle” to, once again, connotate something seedy and immoral, as is the common usage of the phrase. They’re being just a wee tad sensationalist, perhaps, one might think, for ratings purposes.

Archer, you’re a jerk.

waterj, love that “life/lifestyle” quote. You rock.

Esprix

Esprix:

Sure, but it doesn’t mean that them’s fightin’ words either, as Hastur seemed to imply.

And it doesn’t mean that Bravo is a bunch of patronizing bastards (though actually I think they are.)
The phrase is in such wide usuage (though I’ll never say it again,) that a strong overt negative reaction to it when used in casual context might seem a whee bit oversensitive.

All this and more when we return to…

Nightline.

Esprix, a question for the gay guy. Thin skinned aren’t you?
I have yet to refer to anyone here with any moniker. And, I will not reply in kind to you. For the record, I don’t care if a person is gay or not. I will also state that I am tired of society walking around on eggs to avoid offending thin skinned individuals expecting special considerations and speech patterns because of their lifestyles.

{SIGH}

The phrase is generally used in a derogatory manner - that is its “wide usage,” and hence why the off-the-cuff reaction is hostile. I’m still not convinced you understand this.

Oversensitive? Maybe. But when, time after time after time, somebody finds out you’re gay and reduces your entire life to what happens with your penis in the bedroom, it grows tiresome. Some people, like Hastur, find release in posting an innocuous thread to a generally open-minded discussion board on the internet. So mote it be.

And Archer, go here and answer my burning question, won’t you?

Esprix

I was going to post another cautionary notice, but fuck it. This topic has now generated two Pit threads. It ain’t worth it; I’m closing this sumbitch.

Bye-bye.
