Twice now in the past week I’ve started my computer only to find that Firefox had lost quite a few of my bookmarks. Anyone else run into this? Any ideas how to fix it?

Nope. Sorry. I’ve had the same bookmarks for years.
Here are tips from Mozilla on recovering lost bookmarks and preventing future problems including backing them up. I also store my bookmarks at mybookmarks.com and try to remember to update the list occasionally. del.icio.us is a more popular site for storing bookmarks.
I know this used to happen with Firefox 1.x (pre-1.5 I think) which was caused by a new session being opened up when the previous session failed to close down properly and left a phantom task running. This caused the new session to try and access the bookmarks – which were opened in protected read mode – fail, and then kill them and start a new set, killing your old one.
I thought they’d fixed this though. Could be a different problem, but that was the cause of this exact problem in old versions.
The solution was to upgrade to the new version. (3.01 is out, FYI)
