Firefox not working properly

The problem is a little hard to describe, so bear with me. It stopped working properly after some upgrade a few months ago.

Let’s say I am reading the Times. I go through the list of topics and find an article I want to read. So I click on it, read it and then click on the back arrow. Before that upgrade, it would always return to place I was at on the main page. It still does that sometimes, provided I was less than halfway through the main page. But if I had been more that halfway, it returns only to the halfway point. This is particularly annoying on Sundays, owing to the length of the Sunday times.

I can use MS Edge, but then I get annoying commercials. Also I cannot figure out how to move my password file and cookies over to Edge. In fact, Edge doesn’t seem to have a password file. I guess I could maintain my own but it is annoying.

Has anyone else here run into this? Any thoughts on how to fix it?

Not a fix, but a workaround: If you middle click to open that article, it will open in a new tab. Then you can close the tab to go back to where you were.

Unless that is what you are alreadyt doing.
If that’s the case, then you probably need to turn off Memory Saver or Tab Discarding or similar. I’m sure someone can post the details of how to do this in Firefox.

What page is this happening on? I can’t recreate it, but it might also be certainly a thing with that website, you might want to click and HOLD on the back arrow, and go back a few pages, the title preview should be clear that it’s the main page.

Edge certainly has saved passwords. It’s “Microsoft Wallet”. Edge also supports uBlock and similar. So you can use that instead for this website, but also something might be need to be reconfigured.

I’ve seen a number of these kinds of problems since the latest “improvements”.

On my iPad I get the jumping around thing you described. After the recent update they also eliminated the home button on blank tabs (WTF?!) and I’m getting redirected spam pages. It’s more stable on my Windows laptop. Thanks a lot, Firefox.

Do you mean right click? I just tried that and a menu opened up. If I click on open in a new window, it does that but leaves me in the old window. That requires yet another click to get there. But it does work. If I choose from the menu, open in a new private window, it does that and puts me in that new window. I guess that’s the best I can do. And when I close that new window, I am back where I wanted to be, so that’s what I will do. Thanks for the suggestion.

How many buttons are on your mouse? Middle-click means momentarily press the middle button of the row under your fingers. [Though it may be a little wheel you have to depress, that does not seem uncommon.] Though it did not switch to the new tab when I tested this.

If your mouse doesn’t have a middle button, you can hold down Ctrl while left clicking on a link to open it in a new window. You can hold down Ctrl+Shift to open in a new window and immediately switch focus to that window.
