Firefox Problem

I’m running win 8.1 & the new Firefox update.

The colors in YouTube are out of whack.
Images are mostly green with magenta "ghosts>

For brief periods, it works normally.

Anybody else got this?

Are you sure it’s just Firefox doing that? Sounds like a video card/driver issue.

Another possibility; if your monitor is connected to the computer via a VGA cable, make sure it’s tight. Could be a loose wire.

Ahh–problem only appeared after a new version of Fox was added.

Probably that.

OK, downloaded without adblock.

And now it works.

???

I’m going to hijack this thread because this question also concerns the Firefox update.

I updated Firefox no problem. Right after the update, when Firefox came back up there was a tab that said “Critical Update” and had a download here button. I didn’t push the button because the address wasn’t Mozilla. Unfortunately I didn’t note whose address it was. Was this a legitimate update? Should I have downloaded and installed it?

What website were you on previously, i.e. what website comes up when you click “back”?

If the website has a link to download a .js file and the URL is something random, it’s a common ad-related scam or virus.

There was a warning about a Java script file. That caused me to look at the address bar and like I said I didn’t recognize it, so I didn’t click it. That was earlier today, I just thought I would check to see if anyone knew if it was legitimate.

I had the same problem on Youtube after the newest Firefox update. It is only happens using Firefox.

100% NOT legitimate.

You should NOT have installed it.

This is a scam trying to get you to install malware. Firefox does not use this method to issue updates. I used to get these things a lot on the SMDB, but I haven’t had one in a long time.

Getting a pop-up message to download a “Critical Firefox update” but URL doesn’t seem right/Mozilla originated.

I don’t know what is causing it or how to fix it, but based on the HOURS I spent trying to fix my own quantum update problems yesterday, it’s a common-enough error. Maybe it’s a conflict with your system, but you’re not alone.

For me I lost so many of my fairly-necessary add-ons. I figured out how to work around most of them and a few others should be updating in the next week or two. It might be time for me to check out Opera. I hate chrome and explorer/edge and safari.

I was a devoted Firefox user for many years, but I switched a few months ago.

I’m now using the Pale Moon browser. It’s similar to the old Firefox from a couple of years ago, before they messed it up by introducing the Australis interface and trying to imitate Chrome.

It was forked from Firefox a few years earlier, and has been developed independently ever since. It’s frequently updated and secure. The developers strike me as being down to earth, common-sense types. Pale Moon is fast, solid and works really well - and most Firefox add-ons will work with it, including old ones that no longer work with Firefox itself.

I prefer it to Firefox because I don’t like the way Firefox has been evolving, and I wanted to keep my old add-ons.

I’m really happy and comfortable with Pale Moon!

Is it easy to transfer bookmarks from fox?

might try vivaldi also … has similar ‘feel’ to opera.

Yes, it’s very easy. I transferred a huge collection of bookmarks with no problem.

Also, with some add-ons like Tab Mix Plus, I exported the settings from Firefox and imported them into Pale Moon, and they just worked immediately.

Adblock Plus can be replaced with Adblock Latitude, created especially for Pale Moon, which works exactly the same.

Most of the popular Firefox add-ons are supported, and can be installed straight from the Firefox site into Pale Moon.

It’s such a minor thing, but I loved Colorful tabs. You could assign websites tab colors, but I’d just do random. It made it so much easier to distinguish between tabs. My eyes are fine, but borderless rectangles with no clear demarcation is a rough accessibility thing.

And it appears that it won’t be able to come back properly because I guess you can’t change the appearance of tabs or something now, or very minimally. So it’s not even just the add-on developer didn’t fix it in time (and did in fact send out a new one which broke my ff and I had to disable it), but it’s not going to be allowed.

I’ll check out vivaldi and pale moon.

And I do notice this update is kind of faster some of the time, but sometimes it’s way slower. And is it going faster because my add-ons are gone? I can deal with changes, but I spend so much time in my browser and have used this since… 2003?.. I like it the way I like it and that’s fine that the default changes, but when it messes with customization and functionality, it’s not good. I’d rather it be slow. :frowning: (I should save this rant for the next update and I haven’t switced).

Hmm, I do find it to be faster and I didn’t have too many add-ons going on. I can tell how it is doing some new stuff when it comes to loading a page, based on my visits to sites I’ve built.

Where do you find it to be slower?

Sucks you lost so many add-ons :frowning: They are the main reason I use FF to begin with.

I didn’t like the way they redesigned Firefox when then introduced Firefox 57.0 “Quantum” so I switched over to using SeaMonkey which is based on the same Gecko platform as Firefox and can use the old extensions I like.

Incidentally, these are all the browsers I have installed on my Windows 7 computer in search of a good alternative:

Gecko -based (Firefox clones)

Firefox 57.0 “Quantum”
SeaMonkey
Comodo IceDragon
Pale Moon
K-Meleon
WaterFox
Netscape Navigator 9.0 (it’s over ten years out of date)

Webkit-based

Google Chrome
Apple Safari
Comodo Dragon
Brave (I installed it, but couldn’t get it work)

Trident based

Internet Explorer
Flashpeak Slim Browser

I also installed a browser called LunaScape which is able to use all three above listed layout engine. I admit I may have went overboard, but if you look at list of availabe web browsers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_web_browsers it’s hard to know which one to use. The only other browser I use regularly is Google Chrome.

Perhaps this thread should be in the pit.

My two problems with firefox update

  1. New version show considerable lag when scrolling or typing in text fields. Usually there is a 2-3 second delay before the page scrolls (both by mouse wheel and scroll bar), and sometimes as much as a 10 second delay when inputting text into the search bar. This happens even in safe mode and even after reinstall. Its not a insurmountable problem, but is very annoying to the point that I would prefer to go back to the previous version.

Which brings up problem #2.

  1. I can go back and reinstall the previous version no matter what I do it upgrades back up to quantum after a couple of hours. I have clicked the preference button where it says never update (ignoring the warning not to do so) and have even gone so far as to entirely uninstall firefox quantum and reinstall the older version, but I will enjoy the freedom of version 56.02 for until I walk away from my computer for a bit and come back to the hated quantum.

And I’m right back with the colors messed up, but no ad block.
What gives?
