Previously if I right-clicked on a graphics file (XP and 2000) I’d get an “edit with Photoshop” option. Since installing Macomedia Fireworks I have “edit with Fireworks.” “edit” goes to Paint (yuck). How can I get my “edit with Photoshop” option back?
Open Windows Explorer, then go to Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Scroll down to the file types you want Photoshop to handle, and click on “Change” and select Photoshop from the list.
Alternately, hold down the shift key and right-click on the file type in Windows Explorer, then select Open With, choose Photoshop, tick Always use selected program.
Um, weird, I just posted this advice in another thread…
You may be able to change the file associations by going to Windows Explorer, choose ‘Tools’ then ‘Folder Options’ then ‘File Types’ and change the association.
You can also"Shift+right-click" on any file to bring up the “Open With…” menu in Windows. That way, even if you have all files of a certain type assigned to a program (say Photoshop), you can still choose to to open them with something else (say Explorer).
This is of course assuming you’re running Windows…
Thanks, but I’m just talking about the right-click ‘edit with…’ option. I like the left-click to open jpg files with the Windows picture viewer, as it does currently. But if I want to edit the picture I want to right click and have ‘edit with Photoshop’ there.
Yeah, right click…that what it says. If you want to restore the automated right-click menu option for Photoshop, you’ll probably need to:
- Uninstall Fireworks.
- Re-install fireworks using “custom” installation and try and see where you can turn off that option.
- Write an angry email to Macromedia telling them you don’t appreciate having their program overwrite features of other programs without asking.
Well, short of digging through Photoshop’s documentation to see if there’s anything you can do, try reinstalling Photoshop. When it sets itself up it should drop itself into the “Open With…” submenu. Whether Fireworks will still be there is anyone’s guess.
