Joan Baez - “Diamonds And Rust”: Not a huge Joan Baez fan, but I was addicted to this song about six months ago. The “a couple of light years ago” line always bothers me, though.
I Am Kloot - “Not A Reasonable Man”: I Am Kloot have some really great songs (check out “To You”). I’m not too sure about this one though. I haven’t listened to the I Am Kloot album in its entirety for a long time, and I don’t remember this track particularly.
Throwing Muses - “Catch”: One of Kristin Hersh’s first songs, recorded in the mid-to-late '90s for the In A Doghouse comp. It’s OK, nothing great but sort of catchy in a nursery rhyme way.
Sparks - “Girl From Germany”: Much like I Am Kloot, I know a lot of great songs by Sparks, know I’ve heard this one several times but can’t really place it.
Gang Of Four - “Outside The Trains Don’t Run On Time”: This is the version that was a bonus track on Entertainment!, one of my top 3 albums ever if not my favorite. It’s a pretty good song, more fitting on the pretty good Solid Gold album, but not near the caliber of Entertainment!.
Whistling in the Dark -They Might Be Giants Me In Honey -REM Endlich Loge! Eiltes Du so -Rheingold Mrs. Robinson -Simon and Garfunkel Llama de Amor Viva by Carlos Surinach, performed by St. Louis Chamber Chorus
Song Beneath a Song - Maria Taylor
-I like this song quite a bit and I completely forgot I had it on my iPod
Reunion of Friends - John Williams (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Soundtrack)
-Maybe my favorite track of the score.
Closer - Joshua Radin
-I quite like this one as well, I’m having pretty good luck thus far.
Empty - The Cranberries
-Not my favorite song, but quite tolerable.
Brokeback Mountain 3 - Gustavo Santaolalla
Not my favorite soundtrack but it isn’t bad though.
I have a ton of original scores so I was bound to have a few of those. The list is fairly representative actually (except for the lack of classical music and U2)
Of the 2044 songs (9.34 GB) I have on my hard drive, here are the first five randomly selected songs that came up on my Winamp program on Sunday, July 29, 2007 beginning at appoximately 8:45 PDT:
(1) Elton John – Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
(2) The Beatles – Getting Better
(3) Elvis Costello – Two Little Hitlers
(4) Traffic - Medicated Goo
(5) Ramones – Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue
Metallica - Blackened
Ambeon - Sick Ceremony
Ill Nino - This Is War
Children Of Bodom - Silent Scream
H.I.M. - Your Sweet Six Six Six
That came out a lot more metal than I tend to be.
You know, I thought about that as well (that is also a great song…well, every song on that album is), but Johnny Thunder was the first Kinks song that I really, really loved. I guess I could’ve gone with Sweet Helena, too.
Change Your Mind by Sister Hazel (one of my favorite inspirational songs)
Back2Good Matchbox 20…for when I’m feeling that relationships suck
The Zoo by The Scorpions…a little 80’s pop metal
Stop Draggin My Heart Around by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty…embarrassing, yes, but this was a hit when I was dating a guy whom I felt was draggin’ my heart around.
Beautiful Girls by Van Halen…I love old Van Halen!
"Gallon of Gas Blues/You’re Looking Fine (Live)" by Dave Davies. Wow. I totally did not plan that!
"It’s Gettin’ Better (Man!!)" by Oasis. Great song from an unjustly maligned album, Be Here Now. Love the double exclamation points.
"Know Your Rights (Live)" by the Clash. Not my favorite Clash tune, but the live version on From Here to Eternity is pretty good.
"Halo" by Foo Fighters. One by One is definitely their best album, IMHO.
"You’re Such a Wire" by Frank Black and the Catholics. Nice laid-back song from one of my musical heroes, Frank Black (aka Black Francis). Everything he’s done is great.
This was an interesting experiment. Five songs can’t really represent the depth of a collection of 3,950 (duh), but it managed to pop up all really old stuff. Here’s the list - unedited as requested.

[li]Roxanne by the Police[/li][li]Spin, Spin, Spin by Jim Croce (from his 50th anniversary CD)[/li][li]The Third Door–Pride by Mannheim Steamroller (from Fresh Aire II)[/li][li]Baba O’Riley by the Who (this may be heresy, but I think I like Blue Man Group’s version better)[/li][li]Welcome to the Machine by Pink Floyd[/li][/ul]
Autumn Almanac, you were one of my favorite posters as soon as I saw your name. You obviously have good taste (oh wait…is that an Oasis song? Nevermind. )
Since I started this thread in part to get ideas, this isn’t really a hijack. The only solo Dave songs I know are the handfull on Something Else…, all of which I really like. Is the rest of his stuff consistently good? I recently saw a compilation of some sort, but I didn’t know if it was worth taking the chance.
"1000 Shards" by Isis, off In the Absence of Truth. Ambient, atmospheric metal, with droning vocals. Good stuff.
"Drive" by Incubus, off Make Yourself. A nice little acoustic song that I like to play when I’m wondering about my life and what I’m doing (or not doing) in it.
"You Are My Face" by Wilco, off Sky Blue Sky. Wilco goes back to their alt-country roots on this offering from their latest album, with a quiet start; this soon seques into a blues-tinged, loping melody. A pleasure to listen to.
"So I Quit" by Filter, off Amalgamut. Oh-so distinctive lead in, with the lead singer Robert Patrick drawing out the word “Motherfucker!” in a scream. Kickass tempo, blazing alt-metal music.
"Poison Years" by Bob Mould, off Workbook (his first solo album after Hüsker Dü). One of my favorite songs on this album (along with the Husker-esque “Whichever Way the Wind Blows”), with mournful, contemplative lyrics and a wonderful wailing chorus that’s great to sing along with.
