Dammit. Richard Patrick. Robert is his brother, better known as the silvery-shapeshifting T-1000 from Terminator 2.
Balloon Man – Robyn Hitchcock
Strummin’ My Pain – Fugees
Everyday I Write the Book – Elvis Costello
No One Is To Blame – Howard Jones
Heja Sverige (Etno Version) – Andra Generationen
I really hope there are no Swedes reading this thread who will recognize that last one…
-
The Happy Worker by Tori Amos - The nursery-rhyme lyrics and plodding beat are silly fun, the Tor-ster’s mewling vocal make the song odd, compelling, and oddly compelling.
-
Phantom by Justice - If all hauntings were this funky, a portion of the population would be a lot better at doing “the robot”.
-
Die Another Day (RIT rehearsal demos) by HRH Madonna Ritchie - Someone slept with someone in exchange for these files. I honour their sacrifice by leaping bra-less around in my livingroom. But seriously, that string riff just kills me.
4)Dessine-moi Un Mouton by Mylene Farmer - Le monde est gris sans imagination. A tribute song to Le Petit Prince.
5)Old Buildings by Bryce Kulak - If you have never heard him before, do it. Now. He’s a singer-songwriter who crafts beautiful, whimsical songs that are just a pleasure to hear. If music is anything like food, he’s tiramisu.
THANK YOU!!!

Posting again because I’m bored:
- Crossroads - Gordon Lightfoot: A Canadian folk icon singing a very catchy tune. Love the hi-hat cymbals driving the song forward with the clicking and clacking of a railroad track. All the best folk and blues songs have trains in them.
- Crazy - Cassandra Wilson: from “Glamoured.” An interesting cover of Patsy Cline’s immortal song. I love Cassandra’s dark sultry voice and sparse country-blues arrangements, but I don’t think her approach works here. She tries to make the song haunting but I think it falls a little flat. Not enough passion.
- Everyday I Have The Blues - B.B. King: from the “King of the Blues” Box set. An early recording with thin production values. Lucille doesn’t have her distinctive ringing sustain but more of an electric twang. Not my favourite recording of this blues classic.
- Wham Bam Thank You Ma’am - Charles Mingus: From “Oh Yeah”, one of his great undersung albums. Interesting choppy and abstract solos from Mingus and his band reminds me of Thelonious Monk’s playing. I can here some traffic inspired horns but, sadly, no trains.
- Glass Museum - Tortoise: From “Millions Now Living Will Never Die.” Love the abstract soundscapes of this post-rock group. Relatively subdued compared to the CD’s tour-de-force, “Djed.”
Of his solo albums, I would strongly recommend both AFL1-3603 and BUG. Both of those are fantastic and worth a purchase if you’re at all interested in Dave. The live album Rock Bottom is also great, but it’s mostly Kinks songs-- only one solo track is featured. Chosen People and Glamour are not as good as his other albums. Actually, his fifth solo album Fractured Mindz comes out tomorrow-- I haven’t heard it yet but it seems promising. And, on his website he sells scads of independently released live CDs and demo compilations!
The Unfinished Business 2-disc career compilation is pretty good place to start, but be careful, there are US and UK versions with similar titles but distinctly different track listings. The UK version is a little better overall. Skip the Kinked compilation, it’s got a couple of cool rare tracks but is a poor career overview.
Hope that wasn’t too much info! I’m a huge Dave fan and a bit of a completist.
Not much love here for country, huh? I only have 467 songs (I mostly listen to Podcasts, not music) and most of them are country, probably, with a smattering of other stuff. Anyway – here goes:
-
Welfare Line by The Highwaymen. See? Country. I like this one a lot, actually. God, Waylon had a voice.
-
Man of la Mancha from the original cast album. Ooh… love this. I like show music and Man of la Mancha is a favorite.
-
Tulsa Time by Don Williams. Love Don Williams. This isn’t one of my favorites of his, though.
-
I Wonder If They Ever Think of Me by Merle Haggard. Depressing one about a Vietnam POW. One of my son’s favorites. He’s home on leave and he downloaded about 50 songs he thought I should have. This is one of those.
-
If You’re Gonna Play in Texas by Alabama.
- Bring It Up (Hipster’s Avenue) - James Brown
- Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - The Police
- Stop Breakin’ Down Blues - Robert Johnson as performed by Eric Clapton
- Mr. Wrong - Cracker
- Good Time - Counting Crows
That came out pretty safe. I was worried it might expose my unhealthy love of girl-folk.
“iPod-like device”? You mean, like, an MP3 player?
Nena - 99 Red Balloons. I don’t care what you say, this song is frigging great. Read the lyrics and then judge me.
R.E.M - Man In The Moon. Just a nice, pleasant song.
Boomtown Rats - I Don’t Like Mondays. Saw this mentioned upthread. It was far more chilling before I found out I had heard wrong and the girl in question was a teenager, not a seven-year-old.
The Man In Me from the The Big Lebowski soundtrack. Don’t know the artist, but the song is quite good.
Katie Melua - Tiger In The Night. One of my candidates for “most romantic song ever”. Pure beauty all the way through.
[ol]
[li]Apeman - The Kinks[/li]
Classic…I love the way Davies sings"…the air pollution is foggin’ up my eyes…
"
[li]Hush Hush - The Plimsouls[/li]
From their live album One Night In America; great song!
[li]There Goes Norman - The Undertones[/li]
My brother used to tease me with this song (my middle name is Norman)
[li]It’s a Long Way To The Top - AC/DC[/li]
The bagpipes thing can be annoying, but cracks me up every time.
[li]Fire - Ohio Players[/li]
OK, here’s one of my “dang, that popped up” songs…well, not really; you cannot resist shaking your butt to this one.
[/ol]
One Evening (VV Mix) - Feist: A remix off of Open Season which gives a slight danciness to the mellow original. While remixes of indie artists are hit and miss, I’m a fan of this one.
The Frail (Version) - Nine Inch Nails: Another remix. This one off the forgettable Things Falling Apart album. Doesn’t work very well as a standalone track and only slightly better as a part of the album. The heavy glitching effects are interesting in an experimental way.
Derelict - Beck: Odelay was the first CD that I owned and every track on it is burned into my mind forever. What an album to start off with, I really need to pull it out and listen to it again.
Doin’ Time - Sublime: A pretty laid back group of songs so far. Listening to this makes me want to ditch work and head outside with a drink to chill in the sun.
Proposition 61 - The Most Serene Republic: I love these guys. Another chill song. “She took a sad song and made it sadder.” So good…
Judging by these five, you’d be hard pressed to guess that I just got back from New York where I saw Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan and Rage Against The Machine.

Hope is… By Killswitch Engage
-
Because of You - By Kelly Clarkson
-
Hysteria - By Def Leppard
-
Hey, It’s Your Funeral - By Alexisonfire
-
3 Post Collapse - by Misery Signals
I’m not a huge fan of shuffle because I have such a range of things to listen too I’m not always in the mood to listen to what comes on… Good for parties though.
And my count is 1162 songs, and I’m due for a bit of a clean out and tidy up of it though. I might do that tonight actually.
OK, turns out this is a little embarassing…
The way I walk - the Cramps
**After the love is gone ** - Earth Wind and Fire, went through this sad music phase I need to clear out my iPod
**Where the fishes go ** - Live, not my favorite but I still enjoy Live
**All the young dudes ** - Mott the Hoople, a classic
Evolution Revolution - Tricky, I’m not Tricky’s biggest fan but I love that song (probably because of Live’s singer)
I have about 675 songs on my iPod nano and it’s in dire need of cleaning up!
Weeee! Fun!
Sin [Long] - NIN
Wild Wild West - Will Smith (Ooohhh, that is embarrassing)
Bogside Girl - Seanchai & The Unity Squad
I’m Blue - Eifel 65 (Also embarrassing but I can at least claim that is remnant of the ex-MeanJoe)
Narayan - The Prodigy
MeanJoe
And mix #2, off of my portable iPod this time, since the previous mix was off of iTunes on my PC (like I needed an excuse :))
Kiko and the Lavender Moon, Los Lobos - Just started listening to these guys, I’m impressed so far everytime they come around on the playlist
Where Have all the Good Times Gone, David Bowie - Not Bowie’s best, but a minor classic
Gallito, Guerino Et Son Orchestra - from a gypsy swing compilation, a good little interlude track with bouncy accordian
Sois Bienvenu, Nena - Goofy german lyrics and french title? A fun 80s synthesizer pop song.
Kundalini Express, Love & Rockets - A great song off of one of my favorite albums ever
Satisfyingly eclectic this time!
Well, my Ipod is in the other room so I’ll have to post it’s results later, from itunes I get:
-
Our Town- Marshall Crenshaw
-
Rubberneckin’- Elvis Presley- If I had to label one of these songs embarrassing, it’d be this one, but it’s a fun song to listen to.
-
It’s All Over Now- Rolling Stones
-
Ask for Jill- the dB’s
-
Congratulations, My Darling- Eugene Edwards
-Lil
- ‘Holland’ - Sufjan Stevens I love this song, it’s so pretty and peaceful.\
- ‘It’s Good to Be In Love’ - Frou Frou. My friend gave me this CD and this song’s pretty good.
- ‘Burning’ - Fugazi Good, omething not-sappy lovey-dovey
- ‘Hang On To Yourself’ - David Bowie
- ‘Sweet Caroline (cover)’ - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes proving that some songs actually don’t sound better as ska.
Huh. I was just marveling that I didn’t have more than one song in common with anybody else who had responded so far (that is, I didn’t have more than one of their five songs anywhere on my iPod), and here along comes you. I have your last four songs listed here on my iPod right now.
Workingman’s Blues #2 - Bob Dylan
Cold Turkey - John Lennon
Imaginary Love - Rufus Wainwright
Borrowed Time - John Lennon
Dancing Days - Led Zeppelin ’
I was very, very lucky. At least, that’s what I think. Hell, this is some of the songs I would bring in the desert island scenario.
Awesome We must have very oddly overlapping music tastes because I don’t have any of the songs on your list (althought I don’t have much, so maybe that’s not a surprise).
