I just started a thread Family Spread which is an effort to learn about the geographical distribution of our first cousins. I didn’t want to hijack that thread with these other details, but I am equally curious about them.
For purposes of this thread, First Cousin refers to someone who shares the same grandparents as you. As long as at least one of their grandparents is the same person as one of your grandparents, they’re to be your First Cousin for the sake of this thread.
If you have other issues or concerns relating to first cousins please feel free to add those issues or concerns to these:
What is the age range of your first cousins?
How many first cousins do you have?
Among your first cousins, how many of them (that you know of) have siblings that are not “full siblings”? By that I mean cousins of yours whose own siblings are not from the same two parents as theirs. (I’ll explain in my own case below.)
=========================
I have an older first cousin on my mother’s side who is 18 years older than I am. I’m the oldest on my father’s side and have a cousin on that side that I’m 15 years older than. That makes the range 33 years for my first cousins.
I have only three first cousins on my mother’s side, two older and one younger. I have 10 first cousins on my fathers side, all younger. (I have one sibling.) So there are 15 people in my First Cousins group, counting my brother and me.
In all but one case, the cousins in the same family are all “full siblings.” In that one case, two of them had the same mother and father, and the third shared the same mother as the other two.
==========================
I know friends’ families where half-siblings and step-siblings abound. In some cases, I’m pretty sure there are siblings (half-, step-, or otherwise) whose very existence may not even be known to other members of the family – for whatever reason. Someone was telling me recently about some classmates of theirs, both of whom were illegitimate, who had no idea they were related, while others in their class knew since childhood that they were, but had kept that information a secret from them – for whatever reason.
If you know of such stories, I consider that sort of thing to be within the scope of this thread, especially if you’re aware of such relationships of your own.
The youngest is 18 and the oldest is 42 (24 years). They’re both on the same side and both live in the same house at the moment!
How many first cousins do you have?
I have 9 first cousins, 5 on one side (all boys) and 4 on the other (2/2)

Not sure. Maybe 15 years, or so. (Two I’ve never met, and three I haven’t seen in 26 years.)
How many first cousins do you have?
Ahh… 11. No, 10. (One has died.)

I think my youngest first cousin is 34 while the oldest is 60. I’m not sure because there’s a whole hell of a lot of them.
I have five double-first-cousins (that is, we shared all the same grandparents; my father’s twin brother was married to one of my mother’s sister). I have twenty-two living first cousins who only share two grandparents; there are two more who are deceased.
The five double-first cousins had one half-brother, now deceased. Also, I have a half-sister, so all my first cousins have one cousin who fits the criterion you named.
I’ve lost track of the first-cousins once removed (i.e., the children of my first cousins) for reasons left as an exercise for the class.
Thanks, ZipperJJ and Leaffan. I’ll go ahead and mention another issue/concern separate from those in the OP.
Even though I’ve said that “for the sake of this thread” to regard as First Cousins those people who share at least one grandparent with you, I’m curious about the nomenclature of those other relationships that can exist within the shared-grandparent cohort. How many blood kin relationships have unique names when at least one grandparent is common to them?
Does your family have other names for First Cousins?
1) What is the age range of your first cousins?
I am 42. My oldest first cousin is in his early 60s, my youngest is in her early 30s.
2) How many first cousins do you have?
9 (mother’s side: 5, father’s side: 4)
3) Among your first cousins, how many of them (that you know of) have siblings that are not “full siblings”? By that I mean cousins of yours whose own siblings are not from the same two parents as theirs.
3 of them on my father’s side may, their parents divorced when they were all relatively young and their mother could well have had more kids with a new husband. I’m not terribly close with them, as you may have guessed, so I’m not sure.
24 living, four dead; father’s side 20, mother’s side 8
One aunt had three from her first husband, and two from her second. One uncle had one biological child, and adopted the daughter from his second marriage.
My brother is about to turn 53, youngest cousin is maybe 30, so about 23years give or take. I’ve never met my youngest cousin. I met his brother when he was 6 months, then again when he was 20.
How many first cousins do you have?
5 paternal, 2 maternal.

What is the age range of your first cousins?
The youngest is 17. The oldest is about 35.
How many first cousins do you have?
4 - all on my mother’s side. I have one uncle on my father’s side who never married.

Three of my first cousins have the same mother (my aunt) and all three have different fathers.
Actually there’s a fourth cousin, who I’ve never met, and has a different father from all of the others; he was separated from my aunt when the father abducted him as a baby; all his life the cousin was told by his father that his mother abandoned him and never wanted him, which was far from the truth (my aunt searched for him for 20 years). They recently made contact for the fitst time, I think he is about 40, but due to lots of factors, chooses not to be a part of the family. So he is in name only and I didn’t count him in the above list. However, he IS part of the family lore, in that everyone knew the story of his abduction and my aunt’s search.
I have so many I really don’t know them all. Both my mother and my father’s family had six kids, and they all had a lot of kids.
My youngest cousin is 14 (I think). Oldest? Gotta be pushing 60, I would think. At least mid-50s. My oldest brother is in his early 50s and I know we have cousins older than he is.
How many? Sheesh, you ask hard questions. At least… 30? Maybe 40? Lots. I know all my maternal cousins, but there’s a whole pile on my father’s side that I never got to know very well.
At least one is not a full sibling. In fact, she’s not a sibling at all - her mother was married before marrying my uncle, and the cousin was from her first marriage. I didn’t really know that until I was 10 or 12, though, and have always thought of her as a “real” cousin.
What is the age range of your first cousins?
Youngest is 30, oldest is 50.
How many first cousins do you have?
10 - 9 maternal, 1 paternal

Five of my cousins are adopted (none of them share biological parents). One other cousin is a “step” - my mom’s sister had two kids, then divorced and remarried a man with a child. Not cousins, but my brother and I are half-siblings (same mom, different dads).
1) What is the age range of your first cousins?
About 20 years, roughly the same range as that of my oldest to youngest aunts/uncles.
2) How many first cousins do you have?
Seven on my father’s side, 16 on my mother’s.
**3) Among your first cousins, how many of them (that you know of) have siblings that are not “full siblings”? By that I mean cousins of yours whose own siblings are not from the same two parents as theirs. **
I have one cousin who was adopted (and we don’t know anything about her birth family), otherwise all of them are full siblings by birth.
7 of which share grandparents. (one was adopted out of the family)
2 cousins are adopted.
2 step cousins, my uncle married a WWII widow with two young daughters that he never adopted. 3) Among your first cousins, how many of them (that you know of) have siblings that are not “full siblings”? By that I mean cousins of yours whose own siblings are not from the same two parents as theirs.
two step cousins and two adopted cousins. I have no idea about the cousin that was “adopted” out of the family. I have never met him, or know anything about his new family. Ironically, I think he lives relatively close to me, as compared to the rest of my family.
7-31. I’m the oldest on both sides, the next oldest is seven months younger.
2) How many first cousins do you have?
Seven altogether…two on my dad’s side, five on my mom’s
3) Among your first cousins, how many of them (that you know of) have siblings that are not “full siblings”? By that I mean cousins of yours whose own siblings are not from the same two parents as theirs. (I’ll explain in my own case below.)
My seven-year-old cousin has three older half brothers that are my uncle’s stepchildren.
I’m the oldest at 37, and my mom’s youngest sister has a daughter who’s about 6.
None.
I think it’s funny that my 7yo daughter loves to play with my cousin who’s 9. That’s what happens when you’re the first child of the two first children with big families I guess!
On my mother’s side, about 25 years. I’m not sure exactly how old my oldest cousin is. On my father’s side, about twenty years. This time I’m not sure how old my youngest cousin is.
How many first cousins do you have?
Eleven. Nine on my mom’s side (she has four siblings) and two on my dad’s side (he only has one).
Among your first cousins, how many of them (that you know of) have siblings that are not “full siblings”?
My two cousins on my dad’s side are not full siblings - my aunt has been married twice and had one child with each of her husbands.
