I have just started playing Killzone, the highly anticipated First Person Shooter for the PS2 and I must say I am impressed.
It plays in the not-so-distant future, where colonists who left Earth some time ago return to claim their planet back.
You are fighting to defend the planet.
It has some of the most realistic looking graphics of urban city warfare.
The weapons are beautifully animated and have a very realistic feel to them.
The music is great : the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performed some very bombastic music.
There are a few drawbacks : it is pretty linear and might get a bit repetitive after a while.
In short : the PS2 finally has a decent FPS!!! (Which was also made in my home-country the Netherlands )
And as far as it beating **Halo ** : no.
It is a very different game.
It did feel like playing **Halo ** for the first time though.
I was going to pick this up for the XBOX, but I’m already playing 3 other games right now. I’ll probably end up getting it next month though. I’ve heard some good things about it, but that it’s “not Halo” - not necessarily a bad thing. If I want to play Halo, I can play Halo. Is the HUD pretty similar?
You won’t be able to, as it is a PS2 exclusive game.
The HUD is slightly different, but similar to most FPS.
You have an enery-gage in the top-left and an ammo-counter in the bottom right.
Ack, you’re right! With all the talk about it being a Halo killer, I just assumed it was for the XBOX. And, of course, now that I think about it, I never did see it on the list of new XBOX games. It does usually make it onto the “must have” Christmas game lists. Darn it. I had a PS2, and gave it to my BIL.
That’s a damn shame.
I just gave away my Xbox. (I only liked Halo)
That’s reason enough to keep it, but yeah I know where you are coming from. I’ve bought a bunch of XBOX games over the years, and I think I have a total of 6 still on my shelf since I can sell back the ones I don’t like. There’s been a Halo disc sitting in it 80% of the time I’ve owned it. The only other game I play regularly on it is KOTOR. Mech Assault 2, and the new GoldenEye look promising, but mainly it’s a $149 brick that plays Halo.
Granted, most of the PS2 titles suck as well, but there’s a much larger base of suckage, and thus more hits too.
And Jade Empire. That one looks great.
I also loved Prince of Persia, but that was also on the PS2.
I can count the good titles for the Xbox (exclusively) on one hand. (Halo, Halo 2 and KOTOR).
At least the PS2 still has the brilliant Grand Theft Auto games.
I haven’t heard of Jade Empire yet.
Jade Empire is BioWare’s KOTOR with martial arts instead of light sabers.
Looks pretty sweet, but I don’t have that much time to spend.
I like me a good RPG, but they just take up too much time.
I haven’t played Killzone yet. So far, the trade mags have trashed it as ‘generic’, but I’ve heard some pretty good things about it. Am I right in saying it’s a WW2 feel game transplanted into a sci-fi setting?
It’s nice that the PS2 has a decent FPS, but I’m sticking to Half Life 2, thank you very much.
Dunno if it’s a NZ thing, but we’ve only got the collecter’s edition and none of the normal version.
Yes, it is a generic shooter, but very well executed, I think.
And yes, it does feel like a WWII-shooter placed in a sci-fi setting.
As for the Collector’s Edition, in the Netherlands they only sell the “Internet Only Special Edition” or something.
Must be some marketing-gimmick.
