First names you hate.

I coached a Little League team, most of whom were born in 1984-85, and two-thirds of the team had “J” names: Jacob, Jeremy, Jared, Justin, Josh, Jon…

Kunte Kente!

I like it. It’s different, but given his father’s heritage it works really well.

A baby name book likely, or just possibly she was Catholic, as there is a Saint Atticus from way back. I assumed nearly everyone would recognize the source when I used the name as well, but I’ve been really surprised by how many people question me about where it came from.

Incidentally, I ran into an old friend from high school last night I lost touch with years ago. She has a ten month old son that she also named Atticus (I used it first though–mine’s 2 today!) and I couldn’t believe it. If it becomes a trend I will not be happy.

I think Frances is a nice middle name!

I know two different toddlers named Atticus, so it may be catching on.

And probably not a John, Jim, Joe, Jerry or Jeff among them…right?

Maybe she likes the band Atticus Fault? They were around in the late 90s. Very late 90s. I’m guilty of liking the name Kenna because of a band…

Right.

When a friend of mine was expecting her second son, her mother-in-law called her. Here’s how that conversation went:

MIL: I know this is your baby, but there’s one name I really hate.
Friend: Um, we’ll see. What?
MIL: No, I mean I just HATE it, and I’ll never speak to you or my son again if you use this name.
F: Er, what is it?
MIL: Howard.
F: (rollling on the floor laughing, thinking, “Howie”? “Howard”? BWAHAHAHAHA) Ok.

This friend tends toward very popular names, and has with all FOUR of her kids, as in top 10 names. Howard ain’t one.

I met a girl named Lilliam once.

Yuck. That “m” at the end really turns it into a train wreck.

And she probably has to correct people over and over to not call her “Lillian.” Not that Lillian’s all that great a name, either.

Thank you. Callum and I like it. Hubby insisted we gave him a Scottish name…Dougal and Angus just didn’t work for me.

Considering I was the oldest granddaughter and the ‘honour thy grandmother’ options were either Frances or Minnie, I guess I got the best of the worst.

Frances…ICK.

Actually, Dylan is Welsh and is the Welsh God of the Sea or something like that. I like the name Dylan, but I agree it’s way overused right now.

I hate the name “Corky”. It’s a nickname of “Charles” (I also hate “Chuck”). Why would any adult still call themselves Corky and expect to be taken seriously?

Cyros, my name is Lauren and I quite like it. I’m 22 (so I guess I was before the wave of popularity?) and I always knew one or two other Laurens, but not more than that. Everyone knew how to spell it and I didn’t feel completely common. I still think it’s pretty.

Callum is good, although it may put someone in mind of rough skin on the hands or feet. Still better than the Irish variant Colm, which is properly prounced Column or Cullum, but always mispronounced to sound like that thing we arrange our hair with.
