First trailer for "Sully"--Miracle on the Hudson movie

Youtube video here

Directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Tom Hanks.

I’m going to see it.

I’ve seen Captain Sullenberger speak at least twice and I won’t be seeing this film.

Why?

Yeah… Why? That’s a pretty definitive statement.

Clint Eastwood, Tom hanks, this will likely be a very good movie.
The trailer makes it look like Sully was under fire after the landing. I wonder how true that was. When the actual event happened I don’t recall hearing anything except that he was considered a hero.

Hates moustaches.

I can’t watch the trailer right now, but I agree, I only remember him being hailed as a hero, and I’m wondering how they could make the story into a full movie.

Maybe he was completely drunk when he saved the plane and no one ever found out.

I felt the same way but the trailer looks good. I probably won’t see it in theaters but I’ll give it a shot after.

This struck me as odd, too. It made me check the Wikipedia article on the incident, which has no indications that there was any controversy other than whether they could have made it to a runway.

The trailer makes it look like the investigators claimed one of the engines was still running, but the official report shows that they found evidence of damage and bird remains in both engines. The remains were tested for DNA and found to be Canada geese, which are typically above the weight limit for impacts the engines are designed to withstand.

I just saw the thread title and I knew it was going to be that fucking Tom Hanks.

Who’d wanna watch a movie where the outcome is known? There’s not any suspense!

Right, Mr Hanks?

I’m really having trouble imagining how they turn this into a movie without making 90% of it up. The actual incident lasted only 10 minutes and there was precisely zero controversy about anyone involved. So either they’re going to have to make up a bunch of soap opera about the aftermath, or extend the length of the preflight/boarding/takeoff/crash sequence by about 20 times, or both.

My feelings exactly.

Maybe a shark attacks.

Sounds like the normal Hollywood “Make people just doing their job (the accident investigators) into villains”. So all the normal questions that they ask become attacks on the pilot. Yes, the NTSB did try simulations as to whether he could have returned to the airport. Pilots who knew exactly what was going to happen were successful in 8 of 15 attempts. Yes, organic debris was found in the right engine a week before it was found in the left engine. Turning all of these into “Sully was a liar who screwed up” is just Hollywood bullshit. I’ll skip it on that alone.

Super slo-motion landing sequence, from many angles.

It wasn’t birds that brought it down.

it was a sharknado!

I have visions of “Hotel” or “Airport”-style situations, where diverse people from diverse places, doing diverse things in diverse ways, all come together in one glorious moment.

supposedly it’s “based” on his book, but how loosely based is another question. The trailer does make it sound like they were trying to crucify him afterward, but that could be false “trailer drama.”

LaGuardia we have a problem.

They could show going through security in real time.
