First use of (Region) Strong phrase after tragedy

We’ve seen Vegas, Houston, Boston, and Vermont use this phrase after a tragedy. Vermont in 2011 was the first usage I remember seeing. Were they the first?

I always assumed it came out of the Lance Armstrong organization, LiveStrong which was started in 1997. According to The Internet there have been over 80 million yellow LiveStrong bracelets sold.

In 2007 Stephen Colbert broke his wrist and his character Stephen Colbert started his Wrist Strong … organization? … which also had bracelets and raised money.

“The Internet” isn’t really a proper cite. According to The Internet the moon landing was a hoax and sharks don’t get cancer.

Anyway, I’ve long thought that it’s high time the whole Xstrong thing was put to rest, along with “Straight Outta X”. Straight outta original ideas is more like it.

Geez, sorry. Is the number of bracelets sold by the LiveStrong Foundation even germane to the conversation? I only said “the Internet” because I couldn’t remember if I had just read the 80mm stat on Wikipedia or somewhere else before I wrote my answer.

I did read it on Wikipedia, in fact, and it came with a cite. An article that cites a report by Oprah Winfrey (I assume it was her intro to an interview she did with Armstrong which the article was referencing.)

There’s your cite dude. Thanks for your Super insightful contribution to this thread. A finger wag and a complaint about the phrase in question. Well done.
