So what are some fishing songs? I found a top 10 list online and I have a few more to add as well.
Mainly, Brad Paisley has a song called I’m Still A Guy which include “With deep spray-on tans and creamy lotiony hands you can’t grip a tackle box.”

Da Fishing Trip - Da Yoopers
Ice Fishing 101 - Jello Biafra
That top ten list’s pick of Five Pound Bass for #1 is a good one.
Technically this doesn’t count, since whales aren’t fish; but I recall from reading Moby Dick that many people held that they are.
Primus has a couple of fishing songs, including Fish on, John the Fisherman and The Old Diamondback Sturgeon.
“Big Fish, Little Fish,” from Purlie.
Glad to see they included “Fishin’ Blues.” Great song.
Yes, this is what I came to say. Best fishing song ever, hands down.
I’d say ‘Sushi Girl’ by The Tubes. Granted it isn’t a song about fishing, but they did perform it on ‘The Fishin’ Musician’ on SCTV…
I know it never actually mentions fishing, but I always associate Otis Redding’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” as a fishing song–what else do you do on a dock all day? The “wasting time” and whistling seal the deal.
Black Bass, by Shonen Knife. Sample lyrics:
Someone brought the Black Bass,
To this lake from far away,
Changing the biological,
Distribution of the lake.
Genius!
If you aren’t too concerned with what they’re fishing for, there’s
Watching The Detectives - Elvis Costello
“Fishing in the Morning” by Dar Williams
Nitty Gritty Dort Band- Fishin’ In the Dark. One of my all time favorite songs.
Squeeze- Pulling Mussels from the Shell
Perhaps, only technically a fishing song from the superficial. However, if you assume the lyrics– it is meta-fisherman, especially if you are from Florida. Very Nautical. I assume he probably wrote this on a holiday in the South of France and the Med… maybe Spain?
My choice would be Fisherman’s Blues by the Waterboys.
And I can’t believe they attributed Catfish John to Alison Krauss. Jerry Garcia and Old and in the Way were playing that when she was 2 years old (she was 7 when the one in the link was recorded).
That’s the one I thought of first. It’s not my favorite and I never knew who the artist was but, over the years, I’ve noticed that all men in Wisconsin seem to know all the lyrics to this song. A very popular male sing-along in bars here.
My pick is a song I heard a local combo play called “Bob Away My Blues”. I’m not sure who the original artist is.
*I’m goin’ down to the river, got a cane pole in my hand
I got some red worms in a Maxwell House coffee can
I’m gonna sit under a shade tree on a river bank where it’s cool
I’m gonna close my eyes and dream, let the cork bob away my blues. *
“Boudreau Was a Nutcase” by the Austin Lounge Lizards. It kinda retells the Moby-Dick story in Cajun terms, with a lone fisherman and a giant catfish.
Does this count?
Damn you, Johnny L.A.!
There at least of couple in the Guys on Ice musical: http://www.amazon.com/GUYS-ICE-Original-Cast-Recording/dp/B0006L5P1M
