In all of the various apparitions of reality shows like Big Brother, Survivor, et al, both in the US and throughout the world, has there ever been an instance where to players fought physically with one another? And more importantly, did it make the air.
In the US, the only instances that I’m aware of are a couple of times on BB where we came close.
Flavor of Love had a couple of contestants that got into it in the first season. I think one girl spit on another and there was some pushing and hair pulling.
Fists flew (well, one fist anyway) on the US version of Wife Swap. The guy throwing the punch was a Delaware-based cowboy, the punchee was the other husband. It happened during the “debriefing” when the couples get together to discuss the experience.
A couple of seasons back one of the Big Brother contestants was tossed off the show after he pulled a knife on one of the other contestants… Nothing bad happened though.
And even that was blown way out of proportion. He didn’t pull it out in anger, wasn’t going to cut anyone and wasn’t going to stab anyone. It was a kitchen knife, as well, not anything that he had to look for since they were in the kitchen while talking. He said some pretty creepy things, but in his head he was just joking around. The fact that he was creepy already made the producers decide that he should be pulled just in case. The girl that was in the room with him didn’t understand what the big deal was.
Somewhat similar to the BB incident but well pre-dating it. Second season of The Real World a guy named David was engaged in some horseplay with a couple of the female housemates, Beth S and Tami. He pulled a blanket off of Tami over her screamy giggly protests and, in the course of it, went too far and caused Beth S to hit her head on a door. This somehow got turned into a situation and, after Tami got through rampaging through David’s room and wrecking some of his stuff, the women of the house got together and decided that they no longer felt safe with David in the house, replete with comparisons to rape, and they made him move out.
On an episode of Fear Factor with reality show contestants as FF contestants, host Joe Rogan beat up some guy from the Amazing Race. They aired a very editted version, but from reports there was a lot more to it.
There used to be a clip on youtube, but I can not find it now.
They’ve come close a couple times on Survivor–Rupert in Pearl Islands, Bobbi Jon and somebody in the season-before-last. It’s always pointed out that physical assault is an immediate ticket home, one of the few unbreakable rules of the game (another one being, no visiting the base camp for the producers and staff).
Some chick on one of the Real World vs Road Rules Extreme Bullshit shows punched some other girl (the blond lesbian Beth from the LA RR season IIRC) and was immediately kicked off.
The lastest series of Australian Big Brother had two housemates removed for sexual assault.
The incident in question involved one male housemate physically restraining a female housemate, while a second male housemate ‘turkey slapped’ her. The men were quickly removed, and investigated by police.
I think the producers did the right thing. Although the female housemate made no complaint against the men, treating the whole thing as a joke, I think it it was inappropriate behaviour, especially since it was being broadcast to the public.
You can get away with a lot of things with me if done in a joking manner. Seriously, I have no shame and a hide thicker than an ossified elephant but I cannot see how any woman could think it was a ‘joke’ to have one guy hold her down while another guy slaps her in the face with his dick.
Besides actual sexual play, who would think that was a joke?
