I am not sure which FL Dopers were interested in attending Quasi’s DopeStock '04(South-East Doper’s Picnic) on August 28th-29th. But, I invite those who are to join me in a carpool/convoy roadtrip to the mountains!!
I think Bambi expressed some interest and I know I’m going. I think the rest of the FL clan needs to represent. That means skyclad72724, RNATB, the Bluesclan and Blueslings, Shiboleth (I know that’s spelled wrong) and all the other people who are posting beneath palm trees and thunderstorms.
You guys who live close can organize your little mini-convoys. We’ll all meet in north Florida somewhere… oh, I dont know, how about Camp Blanding as I’ll be up there that weekend
We’ll all meet at Blanding or in the Orange Park area and re-organize to take only those vehicles necessary. Then we’ll take our Evil Red Mountain Convoy all the way to DopeStock!
This also means we would be showing up for the shananigans on the 28th as well!!!
The highest point in Florida in in Walton County. It is 345 feet above sea level. Apparently said point doesn’t have a name. On the map it just says “highest point in Florida.” I say this is cause for a Florida “Mountain” Dopefest.
Interesting, swampy. I was always told in school that the hill Bok Tower stood on was the highest point in Florida. Apparently, researching it, I was either told incorrectly, or remember incorrectly. It’s the highest point in central Florida, however, at 298 feet above sea level.
The official Highest Elevation in Florida is 345 feet, located between Paxton and Lakewood, a stone’s throw from the Alabama border. Topo map
The top of the Bok Tower is higher if you include the height of the tower.
The Panhandle has beautiful rolling hill country north of State Hwy 20. I live in Vernon, on the edge of the Sand Hills region. It’s nothing like the mountains of North Georgia where I was raised, but it’s not exactly billiard-table flat, either.
345 FEET!? How can people live at such heights? I’d think that the air would be too thin. I live a reasonable 8 feet above sea level, and I can’t fathom living higher than this. 345 feet? Madness.
As for the convoy, my brother and I are planning to leave Largo around 5-6a on Saturday the 28th. That would put us in Cartersville around 1-2p. We’re planning on leaving Cartersville around 5-6p on Sunday the 29th, putting us home about 2a on the morning of the 30th. BTW, for those of us coming up from the west (Sane) coast of FL, Orange Park is way out of the way. Gainesville or Lake City (in FL) or Valdosta or Tifton (in GA) would be more reasonable. For those of us coming up from south Florida (Miami, etc.), then taking the Turnpike up to 75 would also put them on track for any of those cities.
Although, with all of us coming up from such a large state, maybe a cellphone convoy (together in spirit, dammit!) would be more workable.
Well, Cartersville is along I-75 in fairly north GA. I’m roughly familiar with the area, because it (or Calhoun) was often a stopover for my family on our annual roadtrips to Indiana when I was little. So, the Panhandle crowd would take I-10 to I-75, the west coast would take I-75, the south east would take the Turnpike to I-75, and the east (depending on how far north) would take I-10 or I-4 to I-75. And then drive. For a really long time. It takes around 8:30 to get to Cartersville from here, so I don’t even want to think about our pair coming up from Coral Gables / Jensen Beach.
And we’ll be glad to have y’all. Please check the Dopestock '04 thread. Geobabe has added some news about a “party housboat” if anyone has an interest…
I just drove back from Atlanta this past weekend by myself in my van (rollerskate competition). It was an 8 hour drive and I took it like a champ. Don’t want to do that alone again though. OhFace and I would definitely like to come; Maybe we can sucker one or two more buddies to come along and help drive. If it’s just going to be OhFace and I, then…SHOTGUN…heh.
So how far are we talking here? I can handle the drive, I just drove from Chicago to West Palm and survived. I’ll let you have shotgun…for the first half hour. I was falling asleep driving back home from GA this weekend, no fun!
