Flagstaff, AZ & Convenience Stores

My son, who attends school in Flagstaff, tells me there aren’t any convenience stores like 7/11 up there. Assuming this is true, anyone know why the city and/or the county won’t allow them?

Anaheim Hills, CA does the same thing. They (whether the city or the residents I was never too sure) says it’s to keep the poor people away.

Is that the reason? I went to the 7-11 website and tried the “find store” feature, and they didn’t show any in Flagstaff. But then, another chain I know of is called Circle K, and when I went to Circle K’s website to find a store there were fi ve stores listed in Flagstaff.

Anaheim Hills isn’t really a separate city, right? It’s just a neighbourhood in the eastern part of Anaheim as far as I know. There are several 7-11s in Anaheim, but without knowing the exact boundaries of what is considered “Anaheim Hills” it’s hard to say whether there are no convenience stores in Anaheim Hills.

I don’t know what you mean by a convenience store, but I’ve personally shopped at this Chevron in Flagstaff in 2010 (at least Google Maps says it’s in the city limits.) They had a decent selection of convenience-store style items there, it wasn’t just a hole in the wall with some coke crammed into it. Although admittedly sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between a gas station that’s a convenience store and a convenience store that also sells gas.

Hijack: I noticed that in New Jersey, 7-11’s are mostly in strip malls rather than standalone, I assume because of soem consequence of the no-self-pump laws.

Damn I want to move to Flagstaff. Sorry for the hijack.

Bring money. It’s a college town and a tourist destination, close to the Grand Canyon and ski resorts.

The sales tax is also 10.75%

I remember Circle K from the time I spent in Tucson AZ. They are very much like 7-11s, but apparently only exist in certain states, AZ among them.

It looks like Arnold has proven that SanDiegoTim’s son is mistaken. There may be no actual 7-11s, but there are convenience stores.

In Michigan, that overwhelming majority of 7-Eleven stores don’t have gas stations and are free-standing. I had always thought it was odd to see gas at a 7-Eleven when I visited other states. Now there are a few with gas stations, so it doesn’t feel as odd. It would still seem odd to buy gas there, though. It’s not a brand name! (For gasoline, that is.)

In Mexico they’re all free-standing or are occupying a space in a city-type building. The government there has a monopoly on gas stations.

They exist in San Dimas, CA, too, where I heard there were strange things afoot at one of them some 23 years ago.

Well, I lived in Phoenix area for a while, I can assure you there were convenience stores. We had Circle K’s, but also had “U Tote Ems” ( a local chain store with a totem pole for a sign/logo)

Growing up in Las Vegas, where there were lots of 7-11’s AND Circle K’s, I found it odd that there were no 7-11’s in Phoenix also.

I just figured it was a regional decision by 7-11 corporate office to not expand into Arizona.

Flagstaff may also be too small for a chain like 7-11

I doubt it. The area has a population of over 175,000 and is home to Arizona’s third-largest state university.

Not like that’s saying much, it’s Arizona, remember.

Univ. of Arizona (at Tucson) is plenty big.

There are plenty of convenience stores in Flagstaff. What on earth is the OPs son going on about? There may not be a lot near campus, but Flagstaff is not exactly just a wide spot in the road.

I don’t see the connection here. And I should also add that I don’t recall seeing any northern NJ 7-11’s in strip malls, or any that sell gas. But that said, I’d still like to understand the logic behind your statement.

Or did I get whooshed?

And Revenge of the Nerds was filmed there!

I’m serious but it’s based on only a couple visits. In the Middletown area I’ve only seen 7-11s in strip malls and only perhaps one outside of a strip mall. If their business plan in NJ does not involve selling gas, then they don’t need to be in a standalone location, but can be in any location within a strip mall since they don’t need to install the pumps.

Now, whether their sales model is affected by New Jersey gas vending laws I don’t know, but I was wondering if that has something to do with their locations in NJ.

An the neighborhoods are lousy with 7-11’s. I don’t know why there aren’t any in Flagstaff, but it’s not because the population’s too small. You could compare it to Boulder, CO or Bloomington, IN.

Gotcha. I misunderstood. Thanks.
