Crashes my XP box, my Ubuntu box and my Mac. In any browser. Why is Flash such a piece of crap? Have to agree with Jobs on this one. Starting to really hate it.
Hopefully HTML 5 will kill it off, or at least reduce it.
For some reason, if I exit a YouTube video shortly after I start it, it will crash flash on every other web page I have open. Usually it’s after I quickly exit a video, but sometimes it does it just out of spite =\
there was just an update made, don’t recall reasons.
I am no fan of Flash, I would prefer open-source alternatives, which do exist.
But it may not be all Flash’s fault. Poor coding causes issues in some. Other times, coding includes things like Ads. For instance on YouTube, you may get the “unavailable at this time.”
This is caused by a third party cookie advertisment and the user has his/her browser set to reject third party cookies, so you have to refresh till you find an ad without a third party cookie or temporarily allow it.
Flash by it’s nature allows the program to use the computer, this means it is difficult to plug up all the security holes. It’s a war between allowing Flash to use your computer and not allowing a “bad” Flash program from infecting it.
So updates are designed to purposely not work. After all if Flash finds a security hole, it updates and seal that hole. OK but what about those who don’t update? You can’t have that hole just waiting, so it’s preferable, if a user tries to use a Flash application that it DOES crash and not work. This forces the user to update.
Any popular program quickly becomes a challange for hackers. And remember not all hackers are bad, some just like the challange of finding holes in the program to exploit. Similar to those people who like doing jumbles or crosswords or puzzles. It’s a challenge.
I’ve tested HTML5 with IE9 Beta and it seems cool right now, but unless you force people to redesign sites and FORCE people to upgrade to browsers capable of rendering HTML5, I don’t have a lot of hope for that. Kind of like what happened with XHTML. Good in theory but didn’t work out, because designers didn’t care and no one forced them to adapt
Been following Starcraft II replays on YouTube since the beta. In the past 3-4 months it’s been crashing like it was a design feature.
Adobe seems up release a Flash update every two or three weeks. I find that each update makes Flash noticeably more reliable. If you haven’t updated flash recently, do so. This will at least help.
However, even the latest version crashes more often than it should.
Flash crashes WITHOUT FAIL if I try to move along a street in Street View on Google Maps. Viewing one particular location in Street View is fine, but if I click on the arrow to move to the next spot down the street, bye bye browser.
Yes, and in the limit as the number of updates goes to infinity, the software actually performs as it should have, before coming out of beta-release.
