Flash Forward: Canceled

We watched the show and are sort of sad to hear the news it has been canceled.

Weird, since the article claims Better Off Ted and Heroes are on the cusp, when I thought it was pretty well-established that those shows are DOA as well.

Looks like some articles are overlapping others - and this one states that although Heroes was canceled, there might be a movie of it coming.

I’m sad. But not that sad. I did love flashforward. And having met one of the writers, I have great confidence in the show.

While I know that they had various contingency plans in place for ending the series at any point, it also seems that ABC did not give them enough notice to effect filming of the finale to change it from a season to a series finale. So the series won’t get the proper send off it could have gotten.

OTOH, I think things will still be reasonably wrapped up. And the show was written well enough that ending after one season will still feel somewhat satisfactory.

Whereas I suspect V, while not written as well, will leave us with more left unexplained and so be more in need of a second season.

Mostly I’m sad because networks are too fucking stupid to gives writers enough notice to wrap up things properly. I mean, fine, if you want to wait til May sweeps to sit on the toilet pondering whether to give your flailing sitcom or episodic show another chance, fine. But for any show with an actual arc or any kind of continuing storyline, make up your fucking mind before May so that the writers have enough time to wrap things up and prepare for a series ending couple of episodes.

Or else, forever resign yourself to having any show with an ongoing arc fail dramatically and spectacularly as viewers lose all faith that any network will ever let a mytharc show wrap up in a kind way, and therefore never bother investing in watching any in the future.

jackdavinci, I feel your pain.

I think all of these types of shows - with long story arcs - should have the FINAL episode in the can after the first 13 episodes are ordered!

This will keep them honest with where they are going. Granted, they could film a new final episode at the beginning of each season but at least they are prepared should they be canceled.

I have to admit, totally off-topic for my own thread, I have only grudgingly continued watching LOST for that very reason. I think the writers forgot what the hell the ending was ages ago and are just “winging it” for the last season. I will watch the (2 1/2 hour!) series finale, but boy am I pissed they took a great show and just went crazy; it is like they had 43 schizophrenics writing the last two seasons.

I wonder how much it would cost a show with a long story arc to tape two season finales; one to air in case the show is cancelled and a second in case it is picked up. It might not make financial sense but it sure would be nice for the viewers.

I’ve been watching FF and while I’m enjoying the show, I can’t say I’m all that invested in it. I lost a lot of interest in it about 4 shows in and I guess I’m just sticking around to see what happens in this next episode. I think the biggest gripe I have with that show is that I keep hoping that Mark Benford gets hit by a car or something. Hard.

Oh, and Demitri needs to drop Zoey like a bad habit. God, is she annoying. Listen, bitch, people have jobs. Quit making everything all about you.

Another show I stopped watching after a couple of episodes. My main reasons were: a desinterest in the characters (and dislike of the main character and his wife), tiredness with yet another conspiracy angle and frustration/boredom with the way the writing staff handled the phenomenon “flashforward” itself.

Ha, I’ve just realised that I am not into a single show anymore. How did that happen?

Where would FF go after FF day? Have a second FF, then rinse and repeat season one? Turn the show into an entirely generic police procedural? Much better to solve the mystery, wrap up the loose ends and fade to black. IMO, of course.

Spoiled for anyone planing on reading the book:

Well, the book had a “pull-it-out-the-author’s-ass” ridiculous non-ending, so why not just do the same thing for the show. If nothing else, it’ll help drive home the point that ABC hates its viewers.

Fan-fucking-tastic. Another show I like. I suppose they will replace it with either another Grey’s Anatomy* spinoff or a lame reality show like Grandparent’s Swap** or something.

  • the only way one of those would be any good is if it’s all Bailey, all the time.

** unfortunately, sometimes the grandparents don’t realize they’ve been swapped, hilarity ensues.

I’m sad because networks just won’t leave science fiction alone, and let it be what it’s supposed to be. Science fiction is not a “Grey’s Anatomy” with lasers, or “CSI” with lasers. I watch all the sci-fi I can get on tv, but I get so frustrated by what is obviously non-science fiction fans meddling with it.

“I don’t recognize these grandkids. Aw, hell, I don’t recognize anyone these days.”

I liked the premise, but it was inherently unsustainable because of what Tapioca Dextrin said. It was a mildly interesting show, but I couldn’t really get into the characters, and I have trouble even keeping up with shows I actively like.

I would actually watch Grandparent Swap.

I lost interest in FF mostly because it went on hiatus just as I was getting interested in it; same deal with V. I would rather have 22 episodes without a break.

I’ve enjoyed it and I’m sad to see it go. The Wall Street Journal had a piece where they speculated FF would remain on air because the foreign viewership was so high.

IMHO, the biggest mistake they made re: the characters was making Mark a recovering alcoholic. It added nothing to the character other than the most irrelevant story in the series: the guy with the ex-military daughter who is somehow mixed up with an Evil Defense Subcontractor. Unless he’s interacting with the other main characters, in my household his story becomes Flash Forward’s Fast Forward.

It was fun at first but the writing was too spotty. Love the savant guy, hate the Afghan subplot. All I’m really looking to is watching Lloyd ride Olivia like Seattle Slew.

Couldn’t agree more on all three points there, Bob.

I have really enjoyed this show enough to want to see it wrap. Why, oh why, won’t they just order a mini-series with a set beginning and end date? I would love to see that for Flash Forward and V both. That way there is no question about wrapping up the ending and you know from the beginning how many episodes to order.

For the same reason that causes many of America’s problems - everything must be milked for maximum return. It is by no means enough that a project be profitable. Every possible available penny must be wrung from it. The fact that that turns the profitable product to crap, as well as creating many reasonably nice products that are then yanked, pissing off fans, is totally irrelevant.

Actually, I’m not *that *invested in FF. Both the one-legged daughter and the sick doctor seem like afterthoughts they occasionally move along and then promptly forget. People rarely act like they would in the given circumstances. I’m annoyed by them dangling Demitri’s fate like a cat toy. But it was entertaining in its way, and I really like a lot of the actors.

Agreed Shellibean. FlashForward should have been a 13 episode mini-series. There are too many characters and storylines in it right now that are not actually advancing the story. I’ve wondered all season where they could go with it in season 2. Now I don’t have to ponder.

I watched about four episodes and bailed.

But I am curious, has the flash forward date happened yet? And what happened?
