Flash: new TV show (boxed spoilers)

That was dumb. But my biggest gripe is still an old one. Obviously Everyman had some fighting skills, but that should mean nothing to the Flash, and from the get-go, not after you’ve pounded on him for a bit. He can’t be fast enough to dodge bullets and be caught off guard by a punch. Sheesh.

Heh, they should have shown him doing the “hover hand” in the photo.

I really liked this latest episode, especially the bits with Cisco and Laurel. And Joe finally meeting Captain Lance. It was great to see some contact between the second-string characters between Arrow and Flash.

But … Coast City Pizza? I desperately hope that foreshadows Green Lantern showing up!

Iris was right there, insistent on taking him to the cops, and I think neither Dr Wells nor Dr Snow were too eager reveal the secrets of STAR Labs.

Recent news story indicated that the team will include Black Canary, Hawkgirl and Rip Hunter, Time Master.

I don’t watch Arrow (or read the comics). Obviously, Black Canary is another superhero. Can someone give me the short version of why she mentioned her sister (is that another superhero?) and what the thing that Cisco made for her was?

Laurel Lance is an assistant DA in Starling City. Her sister Sara was the original Canary, who sometimes teamed up with the Arrow’s crew and was in a relationship with Oliver (the Arrow). Sara was killed in front of Laurel, and Laurel took up her mask and started training to take her sister’s place, as the Black Canary. She’s not nearly as skilled a fighter yet as her sister was. Sara had a device that would emit a loud, high pitched sound that would disorient her foes. That was what Laurel asked Cisco to improve upon.

Thanks!

Black Canary in the comics.
In the comics, Black Canary has a very powerful sonic scream. It’s a power, not a device though.

Also, I’m not sure Sara was killed in front of Laurel, but she was killed by The Arrow’s sister, Thea, while Thea was mind-controlled. Laurel knew her sister was dead, who killed her, and who was responsible, and she withheld that from her father. That was what the two cops were discussing.
Most of your spoiler is about Arrow show and has nothing to do with the comics. It’s a huge, huge spoiler for the show.

Sara wasn’t actually killed right in front of Laurel, but she fell off the roof where she was shot and landed in an alley right in front of Laurel, so pretty close.

So, quick question about the Reverse Flash’s true identity, spoilered just in case:

Maybe this did get mentioned at some point, but why is Eobard Thawn pretending to be in a wheelchair. We know he’s not really Wells, and he obviously wasn’t really injured in the accelerator explosion, so why the ruse? Is it just so the big reveal had more oomph? What would be the reason from his point of view?

I don’t know if there is a specific reason (there may be), but pretending to be weaker than you are so that your opponents misjudge you and don’t see you as a serious threat is an age-old strategy.

Regarding Laurel and her sister:

Well, Sara was killed immediately after meeting with Laurel on the rooftop. Laurel was on the street below and saw Sara fall and ran to her.

The accelerator disaster caused “Wells” a lot of bad publicity; being apparently confined to a wheelchair by the disaster mitigated some of that, allowing Wells to recover some of the influence and respect that he had had before the disaster.

Question answered, but I think this is the first time the character has been referred to (by herself, her prior incarnation or anyone else) as ‘the Black Canary.’ She’s been just “the Canary” so far, unless I missed a line. As with Oliver and Roy, the canonical color-names have been avoided. I wonder if Oliver will finally morph into “the Green Arrow” in the next season, or sooner? Maybe to distinguish from Roy becoming “the Red Arrow” in whatever city he ends up in?

I have to say I am just squiddled pink at how much these shows are interacting on a meaningful story level. If ATOM gets his own spin-off, watching three shows slide in and out of each other’s frames will be pretty damned cool.

I got a kick out of this: Flash and Arrow fight club.

The only explanation I can imagine for that is the serum wasn’t ready when the shapeshifter was caught at STAR labs. Caitlin had an early version on the centrifuge, but it still needed several hours of work.

So where did those handcuffs come from, and why did anyone think handcuffs would hold someone who could change their size, and why would two women (neither of whom have any law-enforcement experience) transport a dangerous (this guy casually shot two cops and he beat up Eddie earlier in the episode) barely-restrained criminal in the back a civilian vehicle? Smart people be dumb! The escape itself was moderately clever, pretending to be a kidnapped child, but Hannibal Bates already knew that the best way to escape was to just act casual - the way the gets all spooked by Barry at the airport (and he doesn’t even know that Barry is the Flash, though he could easily figure it out later - can he reduplicate the Flash and take his “mask” off? If not, are his clothes part of him and he’s essentially naked, as we have speculated is the case with Mystique?) undercuts this.

And what happened to Bates’s real grandmother? Did he kill her so he could use her house as a hideout? If this guy could literally be anybody, I’m surprised he doesn’t head off to Hollywood and get autographs from (and shake hands with) various celebrities. Hanging around Central City where there’s a known superhero seems short-sighted, especially if he’s so unattached to his original identity that he can’t even remember what he used to look like.

Professor Zoom is now out in the open; I totally didn’t see that coming. This episode seems to answer a few apparent plot holes from past episodes, like how Thawne/Wells knew about nosy reporter guy.

Saving Captain Singh’s fiance was a nice interlude, but the writers seem to have forgotten that people need air as much as fire does. Plus anyone who’s seen Backdraft will know that you can put the flame out by removing oxygen but the heat is still there. Put O[sub]2[/sub] back in and FWOOOSH!

I was hoping he would at least levitate a few feet moving his arms like that.
