FLCL - Nani?!

Can someone explain Fooly Cooly to me? I saw the first episode on Adult Swim last night and I just don’t get it. A robot came out of the kid’s head but nothing amazing happens in his town?! Totally lost…please tell me it makes a little more sense as it goes on–I’ve heard such good things about it!

Its not supposed to make sense, but keep watching, it is one hell of a ride.

There’s even a “South Park” tribute in a later episode, as I remember. Paper cutout animation’n’everything.

Best to approach the whole series as an extended dream sequence.

Right. “Trip” show, with elements of in-joke show. Accompany it with favorite psychoactive chemical product.

Instructions for watching FLCL:[ul][li]Watch Neon Genesis Evangelion by GAINAX director Hideakki Anno.[/li][li]Watch His and Her Circumstances (aka KareKano) by GAINAX director Hideakki Anno[/li][li]May as well watch Revolutionary Girl Utena by Hideakki Anno’s close friend, Be-Papas director Kuniko Ikuhara[/li][li]You are now qualified to understand the GAINAX parody series, FLCL, which makes fun of Evangelion, KareKano, and Utena[/ul][/li]
Some examples of the the series parodying Evangelion:

Evangelion’s giant robots are meant to represent aspects of main character Shinji’s psychology. So alien-girl from FLCL makes giant robots pop out of the main character’s skull. Alien-girl looks suspiciously like Kaworu, the alien who falls in love with Shinji, and she’s even stranger. There’s one episode where a robot gives birth, symbolically, to Shinji. In FLCL, the character pops out of the robot like it’s giving birth. FLCL frequently quotes all three series. Watch the episode about playing baseball, and substitute all the dialogue about playing baseball with dialogue about piloting an Eva, and you have dialogue from Evangelion

Actually, it looked more to me like he was being crapped out… after the robot ate some baaad kimchee.

My word, that series requires some investment to watch, ne?

Hai! Not sure if I’m up to it; I haven’t the vaguest where to find all the other animes–I can’t afford to buy them, and I don’t know where I could rent them!

The show was made by and for obsessive geeks, referencing everything from South Park to Lupin the 3rd within one episode… but it’s wild and crazy enough to be entertaining for normal people as well, under the right chemical influences.
