flights to Miami

Going down Thursday, July 9 and flying back Sunday the 12th. Just started looking at flights but looks like flying to Ft. Lauderdale might be $100 less expensive. How much would a cab be from the Miami airport to downtown Miami, and how much from Ft. Lauderdale? Can you take a bus or train from either airport?

forgot to ask length of trip for cab/uber

General advice, based on having flown out of the Miami airport several times: lordy, if you can fly into Fort Lauderdale, or even West Palm Beach, do it. The Miami airport is, IME, extremely congested and just generally an unpleasant experience.

Not the airport, but I took an Uber from a hotel in Fort Lauderdale to Miami Lakes and it took about 40 minutes, if I’m not mistaken. Checked my app and it was $55 with tip.

You can take a shuttle bus from the airport (see “Connections”) to the Tri Rail station. Tri Rail will take you to Miami.

By the way, if you choose to take Tri Rail, be sure to buy a ticket from the vending machine in the train station before you board the train.

Tri Rail operates on the honor system. You can board without a ticket, but police do random checks to make sure everyone has a ticket. If you don’t, you can face a court appearance and fine.

And, yes, FLL is a better place to fly if you can.

From FLL Airport to Miami it should be between $55 and $75 depending on place and time of day, and between 30 min to an hour again depending on both those. From MIA to downtown it should cost $25, or $32 to SoBe.

And yes, MIA can be quite a pain as airports go (though everyone deciding to instead go thru FLL is starting to create strain there).
