Wow, and here I was giving thought to bumping meself. I’m really hoping this one doesn’t fall apart, as I’d like to meet some of y’all before I finish my sentence here in Gainesville.
Let’s play pick a park in Orlando / Orange County. Or, somewhere else.
What are good dates for people who want to do a dopefest in Orlando?
Calling XJETGIRLX. I’m going to be in Southern California June 1-8th. That’s my only can’t do time, as far as I know.
I can do it any time after mid-June, I’d say. I should be settled by then.
Can I suggest, say, June 14th or 15th for Orlandope? Hopefully, that’s late enough that pestie will be able to make it, as I’m leaving on the 16th and won’t be back until late August.
Aaaack! Sorry guys! I’ve been going crazy over here with the legislature back in special session. Damn legislators can’t get anything done on time ::grumblegrumble::
Okay, I think June 14-15 sounds great for Orlandope, but I’ll need someone in that area to scout locations. Beagle, any preferences?
N. FlaDope is going to be at the Live Oak State Park linked to previously. How would the following weekend strike you? Say June 21-22? I think that fits everyone’s requirements, so by the powers invested in me, I shall make it so. ::poof!::
June 21/22 works fine for me. I’ll try for OrlanDope also, if I’m able.
Yay!
June 14/15 works for me…
Okay, I’ve e-mailed everyone who has posted in this thread with the exception of Monstre and Kristi, who didn’t have an e-mail address posted in their profile.
Here’s the info I mailed out:
OrlanDope

Location TBA
N. FlaDope Picnic in the Shade
Saturday, June 21 2003
12:00 Noon - till
Suwannee State Park, Live Oak FL

Camping is available for those who wish to make a weekend out of it, and full service facilities are available for RVs. Click here for more info, driving directions.
While I don’t recall receiving an e-mail from you, this date works for me. I’m in!
Very stoked!
I’m going to be in Syracuse, NY* until the 14th (don’t know the actual times yet, 14th could just be travel). The 15th would be good. Figures, I never travel until I’m everywhere at once.
I’m going to try to make the North Florida Dope also. That’s up around my old college stomping grounds.

Budget by June?
Right. In honor of Beagle, I proclaim OrlanDope to be 15 June. That’s my contribution; one of you Orlando people can figure out where.
Don’t make me decide.
Canoeing? Swimming pool? Lake? Springs? Frisbee golf? Hiking? What interests everyone the most?
Check out the links I provided. There’s information on all the parks in the area available on the internet.
I’ll decide if everyone tells me what activities we’re looking for, that should make it easy.
Beagle, that link was hilarious, just what I needed today
Unfortunately, I’m going to have to hire out someone to help with the OrlanDope planning. In addition to the dalying legislators, I’ve got a family emergency on my hands and will be out of town for most of next week. I’d like to have all plans concreted by the end of the week. I think the 15th will work, if that’s what you guys have decided upon. If you guys can work something out here while I’m away, I’ll send out an e-mail to everyone with the details when I get back. If you want to get in touch with me personally, I can give you everyone’s e-mail address and you can mail them directly.
Orlando location for June 15?
Opinions?
I posted some links (non-squirrel) on parks.
Right, I am not going to wade through that incredibly informative site because I should really be getting something done at some point today, and would be utterly useless at deciding in any event.
My suggestions:
Water around is good.
Grills are good.
Green is good, so that if we want to do outdoorsy stuff like frisbee golf or soccer or whatever, we have room.
A shady building to keep from dying of heatstroke is a must.
Oh, and plenty of parking is good too.
However, the likely presence of a substantial number of lots of screaming teens is bad.
Which parks meet these criteria? Anyone? Bueller?
I’m in for Orlando. Somebody put me on the email list.
As for where, I’ve no clue or preference.
What do people do at these things, anyway?
AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!! Bring back some Dinosaur BBQ sauce!!! And some Hinerwadel’s Salt Potatoes!! (Beak & Skiff Apple Farms won’t be open until October - damn.) Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease!!!
(June 15th, huh? I might actually be able to make this one in Orlando. I normally have Sundays off from work. We’ll see.)
I’ll work on the BBQ sauce. That might come in handy on the 15th.
I’m going to suggest that we go to Turkey Lake Park (same link as before). Unless canoeing is the order of the day, then it’s Wekiva Springs (link back a few posts). Turkey Lake Park has more facilities and is easier to get to. You can get there without using I-4, 441, 436-- or any of the other really scary number letter designations that make Central Florida the Los Angeles of the East.
SIMPLE (no, really) DIRECTIONS TO TURKEY LAKE PARK Note: some of these are toll roads. Bring quarters and ones.
Take Florida’s Turnpike into the Orlando area.
EXIT onto 408 (formerly known as the East-West Expressway).
Drive East (not far) to the Hiawassee exit. I think you only have to pay one toll.
EXIT onto Hiawassee (back to free roads). At Hiawassee, make a RIGHT. If you head back under 408 and immediately see SR 50, you have gone the wrong way.
Follow Hiawassee through MetroWest. Go past Old Winter Garden Road. Past the 7-11, Winn Dixie, McDonalds (The joys of Americana). Go past Metro West Golf Course. After you pass a Publix on your left, start slowing–you crazy person, you–for the Turkey Lake Park entrance, also on your left.
The park, last I checked, was two dollars. I doubt it’s much more than that. But, they did just renovate.
Right. Turkey Lake Park, June 15. See how simple this was? Only took us a month to work it out!
Oh, and the potatos. I’ll try to get some of those also.
Turkey Lake Park on the 15th: How about if I get there about 10:00-10:30 and put up a couple “SDMB” signs with arrows?
Turkey Lake Park is very simple. You drive around on one not-that-big loop. Everything is a turn off of the one loop road. Therefore I will put a sign near where you must turn off the loop road. I’ll pick a bright obnoxious color. I prefer orange. Perhaps with a blue script.
I’d like to get near the lake. That’s what I’ll be shooting for. Some tables and a grill in that area.
