I was just gifted a nice little pistol. Ruger SA .22 Magnum. It is indeed registered to my friend.
Am I facing red tape hoops?

Florida does not do gun registration for that kind of handgun. Florida Gun Registration Laws | Legal Beagle because I’m away from my desktop, but you can check for yourself.
Where you may get jacked up is the transfer. I do not know whether transfers of handguns in your situation, require a Federal Firearms Licensee to handle the paperwork. Are you a Florida resident? Is your friend?
Oh, and what do you mean by “registered to your friend?” Florida doesn’t have handgun registration. Do you mean he originally bought it from a dealer in Florida?
I will not be carrying and or transporting the little guy.
Not what I asked. This is a much better site for answering your Florida firearms transfer and sale questions: Gun Ownership in Florida | The Firearm Firm
Short version, for you to purchase or be transferred this pistol from him, you need to not be a prohibited person, you both need to be Florida residents. No registration.
EDIT: if one of you isn’t a Florida resident, then the transfer needs to go through a Federal Firearms Licensee.
Gray_Ghost My Aunt gave it to me and yes we’re both residents of Florida.
Then you’re golden, assuming you’re not a prohibited person. Not a felon, not convicted of, nor under indictment IIRC, for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, and there’s some other things that would prohibit you from owning a firearm. If you were, you’d likely know it.
Happy shooting! By SA, I’m guessing it’s a single action revolver, in .22 Winchester Magnum? They’re supposed to be great to shoot—Ruger makes very good, rugged revolvers—and accurate too.
‘Face to face handgun transfers’, like your situation, aren’t unknown or uncommon. A few of my favorite handguns were purchased that way.
I’m not a prohibited person. Thanks for the heads up Gray_Ghost.
One would certainly think so.
But you’d be stunned at how some people come into my store and don’t know if they are prohibited or not. We have a worksheet we have them read down before we do the background. “I don’t know if I am a felon or not” comes up.
Better find out before you try to buy here, buddy!
Fail the background and you forfeit the fee plus your down payment. And We report your attempt to purchase.
Why is your aunt’s former handgun registered to your friend?

As a request for legal advice, this belongs in IMHO, not GQ. Moving.
We’re done here, thanks.
