Floridopers: The Wilma Watch Thread

Landfall! I hope everyone in the path of this massive eyewall makes it through safely!

I’m scared!!!

It’s been pretty low key here so far and I expect that’s the worst it will get. Driving in this morning was a snap. Some rain, the occasional small branch in the road, but very little traffic. My normal 1 hour morning commute took about 35 minutes, including two stops (to drop off Mrs. Shibb at her work and the the Shibblets at Grandma’s house). Of course none of my colleagues came in since “the power must have gone out”. Ha! Still, it’s better off here than a typical summer storm.

I hear that Naples, Key West and Miami are getting it pretty hard, though, so those of you down there stay safe!

My supervisor really picked the wrong week to go to her Florida condo. She’s got no power and can’t go outside. Quote: I’ve never seen anything like this.

Where’s her condo? (It’s a big state)

They closed my office for the day (yay!) though I’m not really sure that was necessary. The office is in Altamonte Springs, just north of Orlando. We’ve been getting lots and lots of rain but that’s about it. Damn rain woke me up at 5:30 on my day off.

I hope everyone down south is OK.

And just for the record the people at the weather channel are idiots. Early this morning I watched some silly young woman in a rain parka standing out in winds that were almost blowing her over and describing the layers of a storm as the parts of a hamburger. When she started talking about lettuce I changed the channel.

On another news channel a woman picked up a very small piece of palm tree (like maybe 18" long) and was going on and on about debris. No, lady, that’s a stick.

Stupid news people…still, stay safe everyone. It’ll be gone soon.

Fort Lauderdale. And she’s in the middle of the hurricane.

Yeah, that’s not the best place to be today. I tried calling one of our customers north of there and was getting the dreaded “all circuits are busy” message.

Velvet: Hamburgers as metaphors for hurricanes, eh? I think I might have shot my television set on that one.

 Which part is the lettuce?

I’m just sitting on the sofa with the windows open enjoying the weather. The sun’s out, and it’s windy and only 68 degrees. Quite an enjoyable day, and I must say that we got the best end of this deal.

Enjoy that 68 degrees fast, I’m only one county north of you and this cold front is mean. We’re down to 59 now.

I’m so proud of our team, during the conference call, boss did roll call and asked who was taking a weather day. Everyone said yes. We compete against the south florida team and we knew they were all taking day off, so, why not? I don’t feel too bad though, we have to worry about tornados where this cold front and the storm meets. It’s sunny now, but cold and windy.

Yes, 59 is cold to me, so what. Our wind chill is 55, ha, better?

Oh, I like the colder weather. 59 would be even nicer than 68. I’m just irritated that we’re back up to 80 come Friday.

Bambi, since you’re home, can I stop over for lunch?

Rainy and 55 degrees here in Maitland (just south of Altamonte Springs). I am not happy about it getting cold but it beats having trees fall onto my house.

Actually on my way out to grocery shop and then lunch with an old coworker, then laundry, then cleaning, then then then – I’m not home again til the middle of next week. Hope the work day wraps up quick for you, though.

Lots of wind and rain, but no loss of power, and suprisingly, the Dish has stayed up. That usually goes quick in a storm.

No school for the kidlets, and yesterday I was told not to go into work until 10am, but to call the hotline before I left for work to make sure. They hadn’t updated it, so I was finishing my knitted cell-phone cover this morning when my boss called. She let me know that due to loss of power and tornadic activity, no work today.

I’ve counted six “hunker downs” so far.

It’s pretty much over now (the gusts are still gusting, but there’s no rain), but boy did that bitch leave a mess!

A tree fell just a few inches short of my car, and about 70% of the trees around my apartment building are down. Mind you, these are the trees that withstood Katrina. Mostly black olives and trumpet trees. The dreaded umbrella tree is still standing but it’s evil leaves have all been blown off (onto my balcony, which is so messed up right now I have to avert my eyes). And my door mat is now in the Land of Oz.

I have no power (I’m using my laptop right now). If I don’t get it back before this evening, I’ll have crackers and a Delmonte fruitcup for dinner. Nice.

I was so scared (see post above) that I forced myself to escape through sleep. That’s right. While the scary storm was blowing over, I got into bed, buried my face into my cat’s fur, and slept. Otherwise, I would have peed myself the whole time. Now that I’m fully rested, I plan to catch up on my viola playing and book-reading.

Haven’t left my apartment yet so I don’t know what the streets look like. I hope everyone in the affected area is as lucky as I was.

Yeah, so that was anti-climactic.
It rained for a good bit last night, and the wind is pretty bad right now but that’s to be expected. No damage as far as I can see, and I slept like a damn baby. No class today, even though we could have reasonably gone in and been fine. No work until 5, and most people probably won’t bother to leave their houses because of the wind so it’ll be a slow day…all in all, it’s turning out to be not so bad for us. Oh, and I got the 6th season of South Park last night so I’m pretty happy.
I hope our friends south of here didn’t make out too badly in comparison.

By the way, does anyone know where I can find the entire satellite imagery from the hurricane from start to finish and not just the past 24 hours or so? The Weather Channel just likes to show a little bit.

Sounds like everyone got through it OK. I’m happy to hear that all the Floridopers are safe and sound.
Shibb0lethI know, one of the reasons I don’t own a gun. I just had to hit the channel button on that one. Infomercials would have been more informative.

Sorry Bambi I don’t remember which part was the lettuce. She really wasn’t making any sense and standing in the middle of a hurricane seemed like the wrong time to be going into Meterology 101. She was trying to explain how a storm is layered and where tornadoes come from I think. Really just piss poor reporting if you ask me.

I haven’t heard from my friend in Ft. Lauderdale yet. I hope she’s OK. My sister in Siesta Key is fine and didn’t suffer any damage.

It’s so weird. It’s sunny, slighly breezy, and cool. Such a change from six hours ago!
