fnord

I’ve seen this word used appearantly randomly in documents on the internet. At first I thought it was a common typo or something. So anyway, what does it mean? I’ve done a search on google, and didn’t find anything conclusive, except a vague reference to the illuminati, so I don’t know how credible that is.

Cecil mentions the origin in Does May Day actually commemorate the birth of the Illuminati?.

interesting stuff. Thanks

It’s usually used to indicate that the preceding statement was intended to mess with your head, or was supposed to be humorous:

See http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=fnord

One of the things that Cecil neglects to mention was that while fnord was placed throughout the news portion of the paper, working at instilling the low-grade fear and revulsion, it never appeared in the advertisments, thus working to turn people into mindless consumers. If you’ve never read Illuminatus, you really should. It’s big and long and scary-looking, but well worth the journey.

I feel a sudden need to post here.

ahem

why doesn’t this thread have a title?

It does have title, after a fashion.

For the lowdown on Fnord, find someone with a seriously misspent high school career, or http://www.ology.org/principia/.

You’ve been warned.

If you can help it, don’t read Illuminatus.

You’re not cleared for that!

I have a tee-shirt with a Ford logo cleverly mutated to read “Fnord” instead… and I wear it everywhere, and have done so for years.

Except at game conventions, no one has once commented, or asked me what “fnord” means, or even done a doubletake at the shirt.

It’s like there’s nothing at all written on the shirt…

Dammit, SimonX, beat me to the joke.

Illuminatus! is a really good book for people who have read too many books and are tired of things like intelligible storylines.

And I mean that, of course, as a compliment (really!).
