Foldable phones not what I thought they'd be

Samsung is on the verge of releasing their near-$2000 foldable phone. It appears to be about the size of a current “slate” style smartphone but unfolds to be roughly double the width.

This is not what I was expecting.

I was picturing something more like the phone folds in half vertically like an old flip phone. I’m really not seeing the benefit of it unfolding like a book. I have no interest in a smaller phone that gets wider, rather I want the opposite of that: a bigger phone that folds smaller. I suppose you could argue that’s exactly what they’ve made, just folding the other way, but I think you know what I mean. I’d like something like a current iPhone or Galaxy that folds in half.

You’ll get them, if the technology proves to be robust enough for real-world use.

There are rumors that Motorola is working on a new version of their classic RAZR line, like you describe. Here and here.

I’m all for a phone that can unfold into a tablet. It’s cool tech. The version Samsung just introduced is first generation, and in my opinion, not really ready for prime time. I’m waiting for a device that will fold flat, which Samsung’s does not.

Screw Samsung’s folding phone; I’m holding out for kiyomo beads.

I’d rather have a Global.
