Food combinations you liked but didn't think would work

I just baked perch fillets in almond milk because I didn’t have any regular milk. It was undetectable, but yummy and moist.

Barbecue-spiced salmon filet with horseradish crema atop a pool of oxtail demi-glace. Man was that ever good.

Bacon Salt on canteloupe!

Not that weird, but around Halloween I was in my kitchen looking for a snack and thought “Let’s seem I’ve got candy corn, I’ve got almonds…wait a minute…”

It was delicious. You get a nice contrast of crunch and soft, nutty/salty and sweet, and I didn’t have that dirty “Ugh, I’ve just eaten a bunch of waxy sugar” feeling that sometimes comes with eating candy corn.

Peanut butter and hot sauce.

Yogurt and meat - actually can work

reminds me of this video-

Pumpkin chili. I had it last night and it’s really good.

Back in the 70s a waitress gave me a hot fudge sundae made with orange sherbet instead of vanilla ice cream. I spent the next ten years eating my hot fudge sundaes that way (often skipping dessert altogether if a restaurant didn’t have orange sherbet).

It may not sound that exotic, but I used to get a lot of looks.

If you’re ever in Madison, WI, you should try the Babcock Hall orange frozen custard with chocolate chips. It’s one of their standard flavors, and it’s delicious!

nm double post.

Can you use canned peaches, or do they have to be fresh?

I don’t remember where we got the idea, but at some point my wife and I decided to try a pizza topped with spinach, feta cheese–and walnuts. The waiter gave us a weird look.

It’s our go-to pizza now. If you’ve never had walnuts on pizza, you gotta try it.

Hot cheese raviolis in cold plain yogurt with fresh crushed garlic whipped in, with hot melted butter with plenty of paprika in it drizzled over the top.

Peanut butter and spam sandwiches.

Grill sliced spam, put between two slices of caraway rye that have been lightly spread with peanut butter, then grill the sandwich. Sounds :dubious: but it’s good.

Yes, alcohol was involved in the discovery of this concoction. :stuck_out_tongue:

I just invented my new drink, the Bacon Dog!

A Salty Dog is a Greyhound <vodka and grapefruit juice> with salt around the rim.

Bacon salt for the win. <3

I really wasn’t sure it would work, but I had to try.

Balsamic Vinegar and blue cheese for chicken- marinated in the vinegar, roasted in the oven and topped with vinegar reduction and blue cheese crumble.

Bananas and Sriracha.

Cold chicken tenders and pickled beets.

Also, walnuts on a pizza? Gross. Everyone knows it’s cashews or nothing. (I kid; I’m sure walnuts could be fine.)

The food court in my college used to make a vegetarian sandwich with refried beans, walnuts, golden raisins, pepperjack cheese (and I think a blend of cotija and finely shredded cheddar on the top of the toppings), guacomole, and maybe there was also roasted peppers. I don’t remember on the last point. Anyway, it was about fifty times better than you’d expect it to be, as long as the walnuts were good. It was never fun when the walnuts had gone slightly off.

Butterfly a chicken breast and marinate it in hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Grill it.

Slice a Granny Smith apple into very thin slices. Slice some cheese too, usually cheddar for me.

Toast 3 slices of bread.

Assemble as follows: bread, cheese, chicken, bread, mayo, apple slices, pepper, little more mayo, bread. Cut it diagonally into quarters.

Congratulations, you’ve just made my favorite sandwich.

Local bar/pizza place has a pizza that has “Garlic and Olive Oil Base, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Spinach, Feta Cheese, Walnuts and Red Onion.” It’s delicious, the waiter is crazy.

I just saw a guy make a scallops over corn pudding, with a shiitake, tomatillo, serrano, and cilantro sauce. The only thing that seemed out of place were the mushrooms, though. Figures it would come from a crude Texan.
