Food stuffs that you had the misfortune to find, REALLY didn't work very well, TOGETHER...

I once woke up thirsty and chugged some grapefruit juice. Too sour, I thought, so I chugged some chocolate milk. Felt nauseous for much if the morning.

On a slightly tamer note, honey works very well in tea, and chamomile, and hibiscus… but honey in mint tisane just does not work right.

My purchase of blue cheese-stuffed olives once inspired me to start a very similar thread. I love them separately, and I love mixtures of olives and feta cheese, but for some reason the blue cheese/olive combination totally fails.

Quik (the chocolate powder) does not taste very good when mixed with Pepsi instead of milk.

Celery is great with tzatziki sauce, but try it with plain fat-free Greek yogurt (i.e. tzatziki without any of the herbs, spices, garlic, or lemon juice), and it’s very nasty. Used to have it for lunch anyway. Ugh.

Feeling in the mood for some Italian-food one day, I was craving Focaccia bread with a slice of Parmesan cheese, but we didn’t have either in. Fine, I thought I would have some plain white toast with lots of butter and some Kraft Parmesan grated-cheese from a tube on top. The butter and shaky Parm were disgusting together. This was about 10 years ago (I was 7) and I still distinctly remember how cringe-worthy it was. Being 7, I had to eat quite a few bites before I decided that I hated it, and then felt sick.

Clearly I have no idea how to eat dairy.

I’ve been counting calories and have taken to having a nice goat’s milk yogurt mixed with fresh berries and granola for breakfast. The granola I prefer is from Trader Joe’s and has pieces of candied ginger mixed in. These things make a great combination. However, one day recently I ran out of yogurt and thought I would use up some of the cottage cheese left over from a recipe.

Yogurt and cottage cheese are not interchangeable.

I make caramel sauce for ice cream.

I also make barbecue sauce for barbecue.

I keep them in those clear plastic squeezy bottles like you see some diners use for ketchup.

Late night, poor lighting, ice cream and…well, you can complete the story. :smack:

Really, really dreadful.

Really dreadful.

Really.

In junior high I knew I loved Nissen Ramen with the miso broth (they don’t make it any more). Pour boiled water on it, let it sit for 3 minutes; eat.
And I was learning to enjoy beef-stew-on-rice as a comfort food.
So, I figured if I set aside the broth and put beef stew on my noodles…

Some things are just not meant to be.:frowning:

Fried chicken is simple: Dredge in flour, dunk in egg, coat with bread crumbs, deep fry.
Baked chicken is simple: Dredge in shake n’ bake, bake as directed.

So why not a flavorful fried chicken?
Dredge in flour, dunk in egg, coat in shake n’ bake, deep fry.
Shake n’ bake is apparently not made for deep frying. It turns black in seconds.:smack:

–G!

Peanut butter and maple syrup on french toast. Even with the munchies, no way.

Hm, tastes vary- that’s how I prefer to drink it.

My contribution; apple sauce on pasta. Vile.

I started making a pizza. Pepperoni. Sausages. Onion. Mushrooms. I then realized that I had no cheese. So I substituted:

Chunks of cream cheese.

It wasn’t actually BAD tasting, just something I never want to taste again. Possibly with lox.

Back when I ate sugary cereal, for some reason Sugar Crisp and coffee don’t go together. I can’t explain it, just that the Sugar Crisp made the coffee taste grossly weird.

My ex used to make Hamburger Helper with Cream of Mushroom soup. Picture grey ground beef & noodles. Grey food is just wrong, IMO.

An imprudence of mine, aged 11, and involving cheese among other things. Toast with melted Cheddar cheese on it; which I topped-off in turn, with Heinz Sandwich Spread: salad-cream- or mayo-based, containing assorted very-finely-chopped vegetables. To follow, a couple of slices of very sweet marzipan cake. I thoroughly enjoyed eating this lot actually at the time; but not many minutes later, threw up violently and copiously. The whole thing, an experiment which I’ve never had any wish to repeat.

Well, Heston Blumenthal regularly serves bacon ice cream; but I think even he would balk at what you ended up with…

I tried to make Cincinnati-style chili using Hamburger Helper Chili Mac + cinnamon.

Barf-O !!!

Yesh, I had had too much to drinx. :smack:

One of our Thanksgiving Day disasters from a few years back… my wife was making the turkey gravy and accidentally grabbed the cinnamon instead of the black pepper. We tried to convince ourselves that it wasn’t that bad, but it was.

Gin is not a suitable substitute for vodka in a bloody mary.

I usually put peanut butter in my Ramen. It adds a nutty, creamy flavor. I tried to replicate this when I was in the US, not noticing that unlike the unsweetened peanut butter I get in Germany, you can’t find a brand of peanut butter at the supermarket that doesn’t have several spoonfuls of sugar mixed in, and that the brand of ramen was considerably less spicy. The result? A completely inedible mess where the sweetness of the peanut butter was overwhelming but not enough to let me forget just how lousy everything else was. You need the right peanut butter.

No - I made it at home. Tea with a slice of lemon is very common; I started wondering if anyone ever did the same with coffee, or why I never saw anyone try it.

With many flavour combinations, I can quite accurately imagine how good or bad they are going to be before I try them* - but for this one, I just couldn’t, until I tasted it. Then I knew why nobody does this.

*For example, I knew pear and anise would be really good together, and they are.

Now I gotta try it.
