Foods you buy infrequently, but enjoy when you do

Knishes. That’s because I live in the vast knish wasteland that is the Midwest, instead of New York.

Nutella.

I try not to buy it too often because it tastes friggin’ awesome… so much so that I’d be tempted to skip the bread and just spoon it out of the jar right into my mouth.

But since each spoonful contains a bazillion calories and negligible nutritional value, I figure the best way to avoid the temptation to eat a whole jar in one sitting is to not buy a jar at all. I usually slip up once or twice a year, though, just because I’m not THAT strong.

Lox. With cream cheese. On a bagel. I mean a ***real ***bagel.

Mmmmmmmm!

Potato Chips. I love junk food, but never have any cravings for potato chips. A couple weeks ago, French onion chip dip was on sale so I decided to by a medium/large size bags of plain potato chips. $3.99!! I guess it is a good thing I don’t have cravings for chips.

Did I say it was $4.00 for a bag of potato chips? Potatos are about about 40 cents per lb.

Once or twice a year, I’ll have a hankering for pimento cheese spread on toasted white bread. I’ll buy the small tub of it and go through it in three days.

A great big pile of fried chicken gizzards, but that’s just hot fried death on a plate. Damn, it’s been over twenty years.

Mangoes. First of all, they are expensive. Second, sometimes they are just not good. I hate it when they’re mealy/stringy inside. The flesh has to be creamy and sweet, and not all of them are like that. So, when they really look extra good, or are relatively cheap, I’ll get one. When they’re good, they are SOOO good.

A nice, big, soft pretzel with mustard. I don’t mean Auntie Anne’s, which are not like the ones you can get from a street vendor or at the State Fair. You know the kind I mean.

Cow tongue. Simmered until tender, peeled, and devoured with lots of salt and ketchup. I know, I know…don’t start. My family nearly evicts me every time I cook one.

Mmmm. I want some braunschweiger now. And it’s not that bad for you. A one ounce serving is just under a hundred calories. (In other words, even if you eat the whole 8 oz package–and who eats even near that much braunschweiger at one sitting–that’s a few fewer calories than a Whopper with cheese.) Plus lots and lots of Vitamin A. So eat, but in moderation.

Cow tongue is indeed wonderful stuff.

Chocolate Pinwheel cookies. They used to have a cherry dab on the inside. But once you bring a bag in the home ,it dies a quick death.
And…Shoestring potatoes.

Cashews, pecans, and pistachios. I will buy a handful out of the bulk bins once in a while and just go to town, but I am powerless over Nuts. If you gave me 2 oz. or 2 lbs. of nuts, I would eat them all until they were gone.

Really good ice cream (that is, the kind I like), for the same reason. I usually just get plain old vanilla, yawn, which lasts around here longer.

And shrimp, and I don’t know why. They aren’t that expensive, I can certainly afford a small bag for myself! (Note to self: buy self shrimp…and cashews…)

A Burger King Whopper.

I’m rarely driving past a BK but if I am and it’s around lunchtime, I get myself a Whopper. Man are those things good!

I am very, very lucky that a bank has replaced the BK in my town. My arteries thank me.

Halvah. Chocolate coated, marble or plain. Mmmm mmmm MMMMMM!

Liver. I love it, but my wife doesn’t so I don’t get it all that often.

Same with lima beans, a real favorite of mine.

Pineapple flavored Jarritos soda (or watermelon). Damn empty calories.

Phish Food - only on my birthday (only three more weeks yay!)

Pie. Any sort of pie. It just isn’t a health-conscious decision to buy a whole pie for one person. Plus, I associate it with the holidays. If I ate pie whenever, it just wouldn’t be that special!

No, crumpets are not the same thing as English muffins.

Me too, but shelling the damn things make my fingers hurt! Then I found some really good, shelled pistachios, and I ate about half a pound in one day, so I’m cut off from those for a while. Expensive, and fattening. Not good for me. :frowning:

Crazy—I just bought english muffins the other day for the first time in like, 3 years. I adore them. I don’t know why I’ve deprived myself all this time.

With a li’l bit of butter and some Bonne Maman blueberry preserves.
