Foods you eat that other people think are really wierd.

The whole cornbread and milk/buttermilk thing is a long-time Southern favorite. I love it.

Also try getting a Coke, sipping off the first couple of inches, and pouring in a pack of salted peanuts. Hell yes. Another country-assed fave.

Doritos on pizza.

Boiled Custard. It’s a beverage. Think: egg nog the consistency of pancake batter and you’ve just about got it.

Boiled Yams. No sugar, just a large dollop of salt butter on a yam boiled inside it’s own skin.

Boiled Peanuts. Simply the best summertime snack ever!

Well, I ate dogs and cats when I was in Asia. Haven’t re-tasted them again since the moment I set foot in American soils.

Liver and onions, with ketchup. Yum!
Herring in sour cream (on bagels or Ritz crackers) – this thread prompted me to buy a giant jar at Publix last night.
Shrimp chips from the Asian supermarket
Sliced strawberries with balsamic vinegar
Bahn mi (Vietnamese sub sandwiches with “mystery meat”)
Eggs with spicy brown deli mustard
Salsa and crackers (as a slightly healthier substitute for chips – this one raises a lot of eyebrows, surprisingly)
Beef jerky (not that weird, but seems to gross a lot of people out, and I do love it)
Shredded cheese right out of the bag, a pinch at a time
Croutons right out of the bag, sometimes with a dab of Sriracha hot sauce on each one
Wasabi peas
Chopped liver, whenever I can get my hands on some (a rare treat)

It sounds wonderful to me. I love Coke with salted nuts, pretzels, or crackers.

See if you can find the salted tamarind too, rolled into little balls and covered with salt. Great stuff! Down here in Texas that’s harder to find, but lots of Mexican groceries have a sort of tamarind ‘leather’ with chili.

Some of my own oddities:

[ul]
[li]Tonic water straight up. Most people think it’s just for gin.[/li][li]PB and pickle sandwiches. Dill pickles, of course.[/li][li]PB and olives work well too.[/li][li]Crystallized ginger, or even better the chewy ginger candies you can sometimes find in Asian markets.[/li][/ul]

The menudo that’s been mentioned in this thread is also tripe. It’s a fairly international dish, represented in the cuisine of pretty much every continent.

I understand it is a European dish. My American internet friends think it is gross. So do most of my real life Australian friends. :stuck_out_tongue:

Like these?

OMG , I had forgotten about this ! I LOVE peanut butter dipped in chili !! YUM ! One time , when I was in high school , I actually stirred a couple spoons of peanut butter INTO the chili . Looked REALLY gross , but was damned tasty .

Another I just thought of : Those big , hard sourdough pretzles and a big , cold glass of orange juice . Take a bit of pretzle , hold it in mouth , take a big drink of OJ . Hold it until the pretzle starts to soften . Eat and repeat . MMMMMM…

I know it’s not too weird, but most people I know think it is gross: pretzels dipped in mustard. The soft pretzels are far better, but the little Rold Gold pretzel sticks are okay too. Just make sure you use a good spicy mustard (Batampte is my favorite), not that yellow crap.

I am so glad I’m not the only one. I can finally point to something and tell my BF “see, I am NOT the only one in the world thanks.”
Also, sharp cheddar cheese and ketchup. No bread. No meat. Just cheese and ketchup. Mustard will do if no ketchup in in the house.

I eat this, and love it. My coworkers hate it.

I think I have something no one has mentioned, which I’m surprised, seeing all the Indian Dopers we have.

Achar. Or, in English, hot (as in spicy) pickled mango or pickled lemon or lime. Yum! I eat it with *roti * (bread) and whatever vegetable, or I can just eat it with the roti, or I can sneak a piece out all by itself.

It’s preserved in oil, and the lemon is best IMO.

Indeed. But you do NOT want to be anywhere near whatever bathroom I am using for the rest of the day.

Is that what it tastes like? I intend to try the vegemite when I go to Australia in November, and I’ve been wondering what it’s like. It’s salty (or so I’ve heard), so there’s a very good chance that I will like it.

I can’t believe that this treat hasn’t been mentioned yet:

nattō
hee hee… the mucous texture is really great. :stuck_out_tongue:

Crackers and catsup.

I understand natto and limburger together makes a good dip.

I like peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches. Preferably, crunchy peanut butter and whole wheat or rye bread, with iceberg lettuce.

I dated a girl in high school whose stepfather liked to eat cooled and coagulated bacon grease by the spoonful. He died at a pretty young age…can’t imagine why.

Oh, and my dad taught me to eat cornbread in milk as well. Maple syrup is good too, but not wierd by any stretch.
