I grew up with home baked goods. My mom’s a very good baker. I’m not quite in her league, but I get compliments.
I really like cookies. But the ones that I can just eat and eat and eat? Pilsbury refrigerated sugar cookies. The slice and bake kind. A tube is a serving, right?
We used to go to our favorite dive bar for their Friday fish. But like every local bar, the establishments and the vast majority of their patrons are full on MAGA. It’s imperative to keep your head down and and be VERY careful what you say. We still go out on occasion but I really dislike having to nod and outwardly appear to agree with their MAGA views in order to not raise their ire.
How can you possibly enjoy your fried fish if you can’t relax and be yourself? I’d rather fry fish at home than eat in such an ignorantly oppressive environment.
That’s pretty much what we do. We used to out nearly every Friday night, pre-Trump v.2.0. Now it’s once every two or three months. We rarely go out locally. Gotta drive to the big city of Green Bay if you want to dine in a more redneck-free environment.
I like cornmeal mush. Oh, sure, fancy it up with some herbs, Parmesan cheese and butter, call it polenta. It’s still cornmeal mush, and I love it. Especially at breakfast.
I also like raw steel cut oats with milk and a bit of brown sugar and salt.
The last thing I can think of is a dish my father used to make for we kids when we were small. He’d throw together a quick white sauce, stir in some drained canned tuna and chopped hardboiled eggs. Serve over buttered toast. My adult Foodie brain recoils at the idea. I still make it and enjoy it once every few years.
My goodness, just where are you? I live just outside of Oostburg, which is considered the most conservative village in the state, regularly voting 90% republican, with a huge Trump flag by the highway exit. But even here folks tend to mind their manners at fish fries! SMH
I have a high threshold for disgust, and that combined with 1) often not wanting to cook after working 10 hour days and 2) having picky eaters for childen has given me an appreciation for cheap, easy meals that take minimal prep and cook quickly. So, basically, bachelor chow.
I love ramen noodles. Good ol’ Top or Maruchan ramen.
Kraft Mac & Cheese. The spirals taste a bit better then the OG stuff. But both are good.
Another vote for Dinty Moore and/or Nalley canned stew.
Canned tuna. Mix it up with some full-fat mayonnaise and some diced Kosher dills, eat with some Ritz crackers… MMMMMMMM…
Goldfish crackers. I’m a like a 6 year old when I get Goldfish – NOMNOMNOMNOM!!!
Red Lobster was running a promotion for lobster rolls awhile back. In spite of our prejudice against Red Lobster food, we thought “they can’t possibly ruin a lobster roll, can they?”
For breakfast, I occasionally saute slices of cornmeal mush until they’re golden brown. It’s a breeze when I can just slice tubes of polenta (unseasoned).
Where? Where was this? What was the name of the place(s)?
We go out once or twice a month for a fish fry to different places and observed none of this. How could you hear specific things over the din of the crowd noise?
Don’t get me going on Cecil (the town). They have their own Trump water tank on Hwy 47 coming into town. The tank doesn’t belong to the town, it’s on private property. It’s been there since the 2016 election. And that’s enough of a thread jack.
Deep-dish Chicago pizza has a lot of cheese. However, thin-crust (cut into little squares, aka tavern style) is what most people actually eat on a regular basis. And being the great food town that we are, you can probably find just about every major style of pizza on Earth somewhere in the greater metro area.
I think every culture that originated in a herring-producing area has people with a fondness for pickled herring. The best around here used to be at a (sadly long-closed) Swedish joint.
I was making a whimsical as this is the SDMB and the town is Cecil and ……!
Bah, skip it.
The Lumberyard? Gehms? Harlows? Timeline?
I’m quite familiar with the area and have been to all of these. There’s another one I’ve been to but I don’t remember the name. I remember they brought us tater tots that were almost ice cold.
