As a companion thread to the weird things cats will eat thread.
I figures since Dogs will pretty much eat anything, are there certain things your dog won’t eat.
When I was young we had a collie/shepherd mix and he’d eat anything except Potatoes.
We used to purposely try to mix his dog food with table scaps and stew and all sorts of things. And when he was done at his supper dish, there would be all the potatoes laid out in neat little piles.
He would eat carrots, corn, celery, any meat, sweets anything, but not potatoes. We thought it was cute, the way he’d just lay each potato by the side of his dish. He wouldn’t eat french fries nothing with potatoes in it.
I don’t have a dog anymore. But when I was young, we had a black lab who was famous for once eating an entire potroast, tinfoil included… except for the mushrooms. She left those in a neat pile in a corner.
We had a dog when I was growing up that would eat anything and everything, up to and including road tar and motor oil. He would not, however, touch Purina Dog Chow.
We had two greyhounds. One of the dog’s favorite food was cucumber, so whenever we gave him some, we would give some to the other dog, just to be fair. Dog #2 would obligingly take the cucumber slice from our hands, then slowly let it slide out of his mouth in a puddle of drool.
Our dogs will eat just about anything but citrus fruit. They’ll eat other fruit – they both adore apples – and are huge fans of most vegetables, but they’ll have nothing to do with citrus. Stoopid dogs.
This really cracked me up. My dogs do the same thing with many things we hand them. Just tonight they were each handed a piece of a pot roast and each one gingerly took the offending object between their teeth, with their lips wide apart so none of it touched them too much, then, slowly, plop, on the floor.
I think they only reason either of them will eat anything at all, is just so the other won’t get it.
Back when my wife was my girlfriend, her family had a dog named Lucy. She would eat anything, including muffin wrappers, dryer sheets, and other dogs’ poop. I made the mistake of trying anchovies on a pizza once, and I could not stand to eat it. I took it home and tried to give it to her, but she wouldn’t eat it either. She just stared at it and whined until I threw it away.
I don’t give my current dog much people food, because it tends to make her sick.
Mirabel (the dog) was being fed steak scraps one night, a piece at a time, and I slipped her a piece of sauteed asparagus. She half-swallowed it, realized something was wrong, coughed it back up and spit it out, giving me a dirty look.
But yeah, no citrus fruit, absolutely no lettuce (it is carefully removed piece by piece and set aside if included in a dish), and both of my dogs think hotdogs are suspicious, but will reluctantly eat them after careful examination. I love dogs, the amuse me so.
My dog even ate a piece of cooked lemon … we had made lemon chicken, and he was begging so we gave him the lemon slice. He would gum it and drop it, then look at us with sad puppy eyes, then pick it up and gum it a little more … until he finally ate it all.
He had this firm belief that whatever us humans ate must be ambrosia I think=)
We used to have a very hungry weimaraner. She was begging for pizza, so we gave her a jalapeno pepper from the toppings. She spit it out and barked at it.
My little Papillon boy, Jay, whom I lost just a year ago LOVED pizza. I mean he LOVED it, and I always gave him some. He would wolf it right down, all except the black olives (which I love!!)… he would neatly pick them off and leave them in a pile, giving me dirty looks all the while.
My Gordon Setter Kharma will not eat French fries with ketchup… she makes a positively horrified face and spits them out if there is ANY ketchup on them at all, where they are promptly scarffed up by the other Gordie, Nick. It’s odd, because she’ll eat any other tomato based food- spaghetti, etc, but NOT ketchup.
The oddest food dislike was my first Gordon, Holly. She HATED chicken. She would not eat chicken in any way, shape or form. Not even chicken based dog food. I have never known a dog that didn’t like meat of any kind.
Mine won’t eat any vegetables unless they’re covered with some sort of sauce, and he picks them out of the bowl and makes a neat little pile of them too. Other than apples he’ll only eat deadfall fruit and things that he can reach, like berries. When he barfs up purple goo then I know he’s berm gorging on plums and berries again. I haven’t gotten enough ripe berries to make a pie with in years.
None of my three dogs will eat grapes, even if they’re cut in half. I think it’s the texture. They don’t like lettuce, either. One won’t eat raw potato, but the other two will beg for potato peels. I can’t think of anything else! They are all pigs, the lot of 'em.
I had a dog who would eat everything but celery, and leave it in a neat pile.
Haplo will eat anything. He’ll eat a pool of mustard on a plate. He’ll most certainly eat cat poo from the litter box. Anything. Every other dog I’ve ever had had SOMETHING he wouldn’t eat - Sam I had strawberries, Sam II wouldn’t eat grapes. Hap is a canine vacuum cleaner. He almost never throws up, either.
