foolsguinea, get your worthless self down here.

That’s disgusting and I’d be totally against it. My daughter’s only three.

Lets see

Did you hear about old Georgie Baird?
My wife is a bitch, he declared.
That caused quite a stink
but he had been tipping the drink
so his discretion was obviously impaired.

Maybe. I can say from personal experience and from watching the televison show COPS that being drunk does not impair the ability to lie nor does it impair the ability to say something stupid nor does it stop you from doing both at the same time.

It’s alcohol, not sodium pentothol.

Not quite. While drunk, you might lie to get out of trouble (say with the cops) or make yourself look better (I drive a Ferrari, how about we go to my place?).

Basically, you say things you don’t believe while drunk for the same reasons you lie while sober - you think it will get you something. Like getting out of trouble or the improved regard of your fellow human beings or to smooth over an awkward situation. But your judgment about what you get out of it can be impaired while drunk.

In the context of Oldman’s interview there is no conceivable scenario where making antisemitic statements serves any such purpose. Alcohol may have impaired his ability to properly determine what he would get for speaking his mind, but it’s something he probably does believe. Or he doesn’t believe those things but he thought other people secretly do believe those things. Either way, it’s bad. He either holds antisemitic sentiments or believes the general public does.

The problem isn’t that his internal filter turned off. It’s that his internal filter was malfunctioning - it didn’t realize the easiest remarks to make (the ones he probably personally believed - rather than the kinds of remarks his “public” persona would make, which require more effort) made him look bad.

Jews run physics.

If you value your gravity and shit like that, you’d better make nice with the Jews.

Some Doper in a race-related thread asked me how my father would feel about me marrying a black guy, thinking he was going to demonstrate how his racism was exactly like other people’s racism.

Pretty funny given 1. I did marry a black guy and 2. My father is dead.

Kinda took the wind out of his sails a bit. The doper’s sails, that is. Not Dad’s.

Are you sure he didn’t die of shock because you married a black guy?

That’s why I said maybe. I wasn’t judging the Oldman quotes just cautioning against the blanket statement. People don’t let ‘slip’ things that they don’t on some level agree with but do they say things deliberately to hurt people that they don’t necessarily believe in. Like you said, Oldman appears to be the let something ‘slip’ kind of scenario and those are impossible to defend.

He died six years before I met said black guy… IN ANTICIPATION.

An actor said something stupid and career damaging. Wow. Next, you’ll be telling me a politician lied.

No, I was startled. The huge preponderance of Jews “running” Hollywood is a fact; I felt like spending a few minutes confirming it for myself, and 20 out of 23 names I clicked showed “Jewish” at Wikipedia.

I thought we were fighting ignorance here. Yet simpletons made jokes about dead people to pretend the fact is not a fact.

Next time you simpletons toss an accusation of anti-Semitism, mentally substitute “Irish” or “redheads” for “Jewish” and see if a factual statement is still scandalously racist.

Why are there so many Jews running Hollywood and does it matter? I don’t know, nor much care. I think, all other things being equal, Methodists have at least a slight tendency to hire or partner with Methodists, Hindus with Hindus, Irish with Irish, deerhunters with deerhunters; heck maybe even redheads partner with redheads.

I’d extrapolate from those examples and venture a guess that Jews might partner with Jews, but don’t want to be accused of anti-Semitism.

There are a number of books and theories on this, but the bottom line seems to be something like this:

  • The entertainment industry really started to rev up with the invention of moving pictures, roughly 1880s - 1910s.
  • That coincides with the huge waves of immigrant Jews, fleeing persecution (primarily in Europe and Russia), from 1880s through 1920s.
  • The Jews were excluded from many jobs
  • The entertainment industry was considered “low class” (a hangover from the Victorian Era), nice people didn’t get involved.
  • Hence, many Jews went into the entertainment industry at its inception.

This is basically the same reason Jews got so heavily involved in banking – money-lending in the Middle Ages was forbidden to Christians.

NETA: Though I am not a Jew, I have a friend with a tatooed arm, side with Israel when their conflicts arise in discussion, and am disgusted when I hear (too frequently) acquaintances make stupid anti-Semitic comments. I had a young black friend who tried to wash his skin color off – that reminded me of another childhood friend who wanted to change his obviously Jewish surname. If you want to call me on a “racism”, the fact is that I am so pro-Israel, I tend to be anti-Palestinian or even anti-Arab.

But ignoring or reversing facts in the interest of “political correctness” is for simpletons or 1984’ish mind police. SDMB should be better than that.

What political correctness?

The Pitting came as a result of positing a cabal of Jewish media moguls directing media channels to fit a preferred narrative.

That simply doesn’t happen. Are there powerful Jewish people in the world? Sure.

Do they run some movie companies? Sure.

Are they organized? Um…

Do they control sufficient news media organizations to exert the proposed sort of influence on public thought?

Does that even occur, rather than those people simply wanting to make a profit - like any other business owner would do?

The problem isn’t that people deny some powerful Jews don’t exist but that there is some kind of concerted conspiracy on their part to influence public perception. A simple Google search for the phrase “Jewish owned media” - which foolsguinea used directly - shows an awfully high correlation with those types of statements/beliefs and antisemitism. So high that it’s reasonable to presume the existence of antisemitism until given evidence otherwise. Considering the followup posts foolsguinea made, that evidence is not forthcoming.

People made the same kinds of statements about Jewish people in Hollywood decades ago with respect to Communism. If anything, they were more willing to play ball with the government to look squeaky clean, rather than engage in the subtle sort of mind control conspiracy theorists theorized. It should be shocking the same sorts of allegations are still being made generations later, but, sadly, it’s not.

The Pitting seems most directly in response to

I’ve color-coded foolguinea’s remarks; please help me decipher them.

The bold blue and black seem to take a view* opposite* to that charged: it’s the Anglo-Saxons and their Arab friends who are running the world! The orange is just sarcasm.

The green comments, though not anti-Semitic of themselves, can be viewed as condoning anti-Semitism; but that’s not that the complaint, right?

This leaves only the red comments, which imply Jews try to project their power. If the same comments were made about the Irish, the Methodists, or redheads; would they be reprehensible?

Might the red-marked comments be made by someone who has a contemptible hatred of Jews? Yes. Can we look in foolguinea’s heart and see the hatred? I don’t see it here. Post a better cite.

Is Jewish control of the media a big problem in USA? I only wish – it’s Koch Brothers and Teajihadists I’m more worried of.

‘The Irish want to feel like they’re in the halls of power’… sounds anti-Irish, in a silly kind of way.

But it’s more than that. Calling a black person an ‘ape’ or ‘monkey’ is different than calling a white person an ‘ape’ or ‘monkey’, due to the history of that particular slur. Implying that a black person is less intelligent, or dangerous to women, is different than the same implication for a white person, due to the history of those types of implications. Similarly, making implications about Jews, collectively, making active attempts at manipulating world events (or even implying they want to feel like they are) is similarly worse, due to the history of those kinds of implications about Jews.

It’s not the end of the world, but it seems pretty clearly anti-semitic to me.

What the fuck is this nonsense? Is this some kind of new tactic- trying to pre-empt accusations of bigotry by posting Dada-style gibberish? ‘I am not a bigot millipede oak sapphire raincoat lonely bells.’

I don’t think an organized cabal was ever mentioned. It’s entirely possible that people of a minority ethnicity/race with a history of being persecuted and, in many ways, being separate from the rest of whatever wider society they live in (especially when that separateness can be part of their own culture) might, entirely unconsciously and independently, contribute to the projection of an image slightly biased in favour of their own group.

I nose-hosed my keyboard

Whoa, when was this?
