Draft night approacheth! I play in a standard PPR fantasy football league and put a lot of faith in cheat sheets you can download from places like ESPN or Sporting News. Is there any specific free cheat sheet you think is best, or if you pay for a cheat sheet, which one do you think is best? Not asking for a friend…
I just look for ones that give me updated roster info. I want to have handy access to updated names/teams/positions.
Instead, my draft thoughts:
-
although your qb is going to be your biggest point scorer week to week, you don’t need to worry about a qb until about round 4 or 5. There’s plenty to pick from.
-
The premium is on rb and te, because there’s a bigger gap between the best and the mere average. Target them early.
-
I think that you can get away with rotating defenses to take advantage of matchups, rather than worry about trying to draft the best defense. So defense is a late round thing.
-
personally, though, I don’t want to draft a kicker last. I think a good kicker is worth a mid to late pick. Get somebody from a high scoring team.
-
wideout: know the #2 and #3 guys on each team. Those will be important pickups when filling out your roster.
-
don’t be afraid to target rookie rbs. It’s a position that leads to a lot of wear and tear, so a rookie is sometimes a better option than a veteran with a string of productive seasons behind them.
-
The key to getting production out of a rb is touches. When evaluating picks, I lean in favor of the player who gets the ball more, even if their average gain per run or catch is lower.
-
don’t fall in love with last year’s stats. Somebody who had a great year will fall off. Somebody unexpected will blossom.
-
I don’t think it really matters what team the player is on. There are players who will generate good stats on teams that don’t win a lot - sometimes losing a game might still leave a player with good stats accumulated during garbage time. This won’t be heralded though. I like finding diamonds in the rough.
-
Don’t forget players who may not have complete stats from last year, maybe because they were injured. This might be a place to look for an unexpected steal.
I don’t mind the ESPN and Yahoo rankings. But I pay the very nominal fee for a subscription to The Athletic, and their fantasy content is top-notch.
Also, in a PPR league, ignore the “RBs are at a premium”. WRs are worth their weight in gold, and should be targeted early and often. The workhorse RB mantra is for non-PPR leagues.
Great advice. Thanks!
