This is really just here to avoid hijacking This thread more than it has been already. My take is that Ogre is being a bit of a tool. No doubt some of you will think that I am.
My general comment, weather or not you agree with what I said in that thread, is that there is a pretty big fucking difference between having an opinion that someone disagrees with and expressing that opinion in a sarcastic way and “putting words” in that poster’s mouth. There is also a huge difference between that and “junior modding”. YMMV, naturally.
You attributed something to me that I never said. You specifically snarked that “it is an indictment on Walloon’s character that he did not know about this bird until now.”
This is not what I said. I do, however, think that it’s an indictment of his character that he does not care. Additionally, he returned to the thread to dismiss my explantation of why it was an important discovery. He was being a dick.
Of course, now we’ll have an avalanche of Dopers posting just to say “Well, I don’t care either.”

I would have felt better if you had said, “Yes, it’s an indictment of Walloon’s character that he doesn’t seem to care as much about the rediscovery of the bird as much as the rest of you do.”
That way, you’d have responded rather precisely to my point, rather than missing it completely.

Ignorance is the lack of knowledge about something. It’s not “ignorance.” It’s ignorance. I did a little snarkery of my own by capitalizing it. I did so because he came back to the thread and polluted it again with his “who cares?” attitude. The accusation of ignorance was not an indictment of his character. It was simply a fact. He was ignorant about the issue, not “ignorant.” This board is a place where I come to learn all sorts of interesting new things…and some I find not so interesting. I doubt you’ll ever see me popping into a Buffy thread and pissing on the thread with a “who really cares?” Why is it more acceptable in the ivory-bill thread?
In your second example, you nailed it. By that point, even before his “eh” post, he had come into the thread twice to crap on it, and the entire ivory-bill issue. Therefore, yes, my second response is an indictment of his character. The issue of endangered species and extinction is one that, IMNSHO, everyone should care about. If you don’t, there’s something wrong.
Simple. You attributed something to me that I did not say. I did not say that I thought less of Walloon because he did not know about the ivory-bill before now. I did say that I thought less of him because he does not care.
Two completely different statements with two completely different meanings. See? Snark, sure. But snark accurately.
I don’t know, I am pretty sure that I am just not getting through to you. My guess is that you have pretty much made up your mind, and that is going to be the end of it. It may be that we are operating on different definitions here.
If you say that I am inaccurate in my take that you were bitching him out because of his ignorance, fine. I will take you at your word and move on. I have been wrong about things in the past and will be wrong about things in the future.
Where I have issue is that me misinterpreting what you mean is a far cry from misattributing things to you, putting words in your mouth and playing junior mod (which is what you are accusing me of). Specifically, those things are at very least terrible bad faith posting and at worst violations of the board rules.
What is weird to me is that you seem to be making no distinction at all between these two things that are night and day to me.
Having said all of that, I will note (for what it’s worth) that I don’t think that your warning in that thread was justified. While I think that it is clear that I think that you are being a bit of a tool, I really did not see any direct personal insults coming from you.

OK. If, in fact, this was a case of misinterpretation, rather than misattribution, I apologize. It seemed to me that the difference between “ignorance of the issue” and “not caring about the issue,” in terms of that thread, was, as you say “night and day.” I frankly thought that you did it on purpose, because I couldn’t see how you would misinterpret what I was saying that badly. If I was unclear in my statements, I once again apologize.

Now, I may have been guilty of misinterpreting, but I took this as a rather condescending Junior-Moddish “suggestion.” In other words, I’ve been around quite a while myself. I know when behavior absolutely crosses the “Report This Post” line, so I’ll thank you to stick to the topic at hand and not drag board moderation into it, making it a bigger tempest-in-a-teapot than it already is.
Even if you had misinterpreted him the first time, he pretty quickly reiterated what he said in words of one syllable, whereat you persisted in mischaracterizing his arguments.
In essence, I think that we are in accord. I was reading you as taking the poster in question to task over his ignorance. I think that I just could not imagine (until later posts, and even then I can’t quite wrap my head around it) someone being blasé about the discovery of a species previously thought to be extinct. To me, that would rank right up there with “they discovered a cure for Cancer? Ho, hum.”
This is not to say that I was not being condescending! I do that from time to time, but in this case my sense was that I was being accused of breaking board rules, when I was sure that I was not.
