Anyone see the Atlantic Monthly (Jan. 00) story on the “Left Behind” series? Too bad it doesn’t mention the Web site.
The Atlantic’s reviewer mentions something I’ve noticed about conservative Christianity in general: “‘Left Behind’ offers no strong alternative to the world’s definition of what matters; it merely appropriates and baptizes worldly standards.” According to the reviewer, the Trib Force people are all brainy, attractive, well-educated, and apparently well-off; they drive a $100K Range Rover with all the latest gizmos. Worldly fame is pretty cool, too.
Stephen Stills obviously wasn’t speaking on behalf of born-again Christians when he says, somewhere on the Four-Way Street album, that “we’re supposed to be some kinda different,” but I was a new Christian when I first heard that album, and I must admit that, across the decades, I still think that if that isn’t true of Christians, then we’re doing something wrong.
On one of the Left Behind threads a few weeks ago, I quite seriously raised the question of how Christians are supposed to respond to the materialism and commercialism of today’s America; I don’t think I got any responses. Maybe I might have better luck here. (Not on this thread, though.)
You know, I feel like they’re following me around. Two weeks after Satan’s OP in this thread, the “Left Behind” books get a big story in my paper (link, p.6, if it’s still any good), and now the only magazine I subscribe to does a story on them. It’s enough to make a guy paranoid.
