Well at least the OP’s cite didn’t happen in Texas (again) …we are awaiting the word on punishment for a former Cowboys player, Dwayne Goodrich - he killed two men attempting to rescue another motorist. Believe it or not, he could receive only probation, even though he sped through an accident scene, killed two people, injured one other - and kept going on down the road.
From the Dallas Morning News:
*Goodrich was convicted of criminally negligent homicide Friday. Because Mr. Goodrich’s vehicle was defined as a “deadly weapon,” the offense was strengthened from a state jail felony to a third-degree felony…
Ironically, had the jury convicted Mr. Goodrich of the more serious offense of manslaughter - which prosecutors sought during the trial - the panel could have still legally sentenced him to probation.*
Sad.
Give Goodrich a break. He said he never saw the 2 Good Samaratins he killed, even though they flew thorugh his windshield and, IIRC, left blood on and in his car. That’s why he fled the scene. Poor Guy.
Hear you there, Hamlet - when you’re going close to 100 miles an hour in your BMW at 2 AM, burning cars to the side of the road appear fuzzy, perhaps? From reports I’ve read, the friend who was following him in a different car drove to his house, and found him in the driveway on his hands and knees, freaking out. He KNEW he hit human beings, and didn’t stop.
Bet me on the punishment: I think it will be a paltry 5 years, 3 off for good behavior.
And the guy pleads ‘Not Guilty’! I can imagine this shithead hitting the windshield wipers trying to get the ‘big bug’ off his window.

Even though the story is a horrible one, I had to laugh out loud at the absurdity of the “not guilty” plea. I mean COME ON, what are they going to tell the judge? That he thought the corpse in his windshield was a particularly pushy hitchhiker?
The asshole was driving drunk, hit three people and then drove for an hour with a guy stuck in his windshield! Lock him up!
